A memecoin claiming to be the official Cristiano Ronaldo token, CR7, collapsed shortly after launch. Data from on-chain aggregator DEX Screener shows the token plummeted from a $140 million market cap to $400,000 within minutes. It eventually fell further to $7,800 at press time.

The sudden crash came after the creator reportedly made over $400,000 before deleting their post, according to SolClaim. Several social media accounts that promoted the token have also removed their posts.

Influencer Hype Fuels CR7 Token Speculation

The CR7 token, named after Ronaldo’s famous nickname, appears to have been promoted by multiple influencers. On-chain analytics firm Bubblemaps suggests the launch may have been an organized effort rather than a genuine celebrity endorsement.

Rumors about the token likely stem from Ronaldo’s partnership with Binance, which began in 2022 and produced four NFT collections. However, Ronaldo has not made any public statements about launching a cryptocurrency outside of these NFTs.

The consequences for buyers have been severe. One individual reportedly purchased a fake CR7 token for $9,827. The token has since plummeted in value to just $1, highlighting the high risk of engaging with unverified celebrity-backed tokens.

Rising Celebrity Token Scams

Scammers are increasingly exploiting the appeal of celebrity-backed cryptocurrencies. The CR7 token’s trajectory echoes previous celebrity-backed launches, such as Ye’s YZY token. YZY initially reached a $411 million market cap within an hour but fell 74% to $105 million over the next 24 hours. Despite plans to expand YZY with a crypto payments processor, debit card, and support for USDC in its digital clothing store, the token continued to decline.

Another similar case involved a fraudulent token called “SBF,” which claimed to be linked to Sam Bankman-Fried. According to CoinTab, it surged to $10 million in market value within ten minutes before collapsing. The SBF token was announced via a compromised X account, falsely stating that Bankman-Fried had been pardoned by the U.S. President Donald Trump and joined the Department of Government Efficiency.

These incidents demonstrate the risks of buying tokens linked to celebrities or public figures without proper verification, as buyers are often left with worthless holdings.
