Hashing is a crucial part of this process. Think of hashing like a digital fingerprint: miners take a block of transaction data and run it through a mathematical function to produce a unique string of numbers and letters called a hash. This hash needs to meet certain criteria to be considered valid. 

Miners repeatedly change a small piece of the data (called a nonce) and rehash it until they find a hash that fits the required pattern. For example, if the requirement is that the hash must start with a certain number of zeros, miners will keep adjusting the nonce and hashing the data until they achieve this.

This process of hashing and finding the right nonce takes a lot of computing power and energy. As more miners join the network and more computing power is used, the difficulty of finding a valid hash increases, ensuring that new Bitcoins are created at a steady rate.

Even though Bitcoin's price has recently dropped, one key metric continues to stand out: mining difficulty. Data from BTC.com indicates that Bitcoin's mining difficulty hit a record high of 90.67 trillion hashes on Wednesday.

Hashing, the process performed by Bitcoin miners, is essential for securing the blockchain. As mining difficulty rises, the amount of computing power and energy required also increases, making the mining process more challenging. This rise in difficulty underscores the increasing complexity and resource demands of Bitcoin mining operations.
