India is integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into parliamentary processes with the launch of the Sansad Bhashini initiative. This project aims to enhance accessibility, automate documentation, and ensure linguistic inclusivity in legislative discussions.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat and the IndiaAI Mission have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop AI models that will translate parliamentary debates into multiple languages. The initiative will create a vast repository of linguistic datasets to support this effort.

India’s Information Technology Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, confirmed this development in a post on X, stating that the project is designed to “help MPs, researchers, and scholars engage more easily with parliamentary proceedings by removing language barriers.”

AI to Enhance Parliamentary Documentation

Under Sansad Bhashini AI-driven technologies will come into use to refine parliamentary operational methods. The AI-based system will translate the content of debate records, committee meeting summaries, agenda files into multiple local languages to expand accessibility.

Real-time speech-to-text technology will generate precise documentations of parliamentary sessions through automated transcriptions. Speech-to-speech conversion technology will enable live language translation through which parliament members and officers can understand debates in their native language.

Additionally, automated summarization tools will condense lengthy discussions, making information more digestible and improving decision-making processes. According to a statement from the Lok Sabha Secretariat, these innovations are expected to “open up legislative discussions to a wider audience by making them available in multiple languages in real-time.”

AI Chatbot to Assist Lawmakers

Parliamentary staff together with MPs can access help through an AI-based chatbot that is a main function of this system. Instant access to procedural rules and past legislative decisions along with relevant documents will be provided through this chatbot system.

Moreover, the chatbot uses feedback from user encounters to enhance its precision with each customer interaction. The tool should diminish legislators’ research time spent finding information so they can dedicate more effort toward discussions and policy creation.

A spokesperson from the Lok Sabha Secretariat commented on this development, saying,

“Having an AI system that can quickly retrieve parliamentary rules and documents will be a game changer for efficiency in the House.”

India’s Growing AI Influence

The Ministry of Electronics & IT has described India as a global leader in AI and technology. A recent assessment placed India among the top four countries in AI development, alongside the United States, China, and the United Kingdom.

The IndiaAI Mission, approved in March 2024, seeks to build a strong AI ecosystem that aligns with national development goals. The initiative has gathered 67 foundation model development proposals during February 2025.

Of the received proposals the IndiaAI Mission has 22 large language models along with multimodal AI solutions and 45 domain-specific applications targeting healthcare education and financial services.

With these advancements, India is positioning itself at the forefront of AI-driven governance, making parliamentary processes more accessible and efficient for all.
