Russia has sanctioned 17-year-old British researcher Alexander Browder following his investigation into a state-linked stablecoin that allegedly processed more than $110 billion in illicit cryptocurrency transactions during 2025. The move placed Browder alongside four other British nationals, including journalist Katherine Belton, on Russia’s sanctions list. However, the teenager views the designation as evidence that his work has attracted attention from those connected to the network he investigated.

Browder spent the last 18 months building what he describes as the world’s largest open-source database focused on cryptocurrency money laundering. Through that project, he tracked digital asset flows across multiple blockchain networks and identified participants linked to suspicious financial activity.

His research centered on A7A5, a ruble-pegged stablecoin that authorities in Europe have already linked to sanctions evasion efforts. The European Union sanctioned A7A5 in October 2025, stating that the digital asset served as a tool for bypassing economic restrictions imposed over Russia’s war in Ukraine.

According to Browder, the database revealed how funds moved through crypto networks and identified entities that helped facilitate transactions connected to the stablecoin. Moreover, his findings gained attention among British lawmakers concerned about the role of digital assets in sanctions evasion.

Stablecoin Findings Prompt Political Action

The investigation soon moved beyond the cryptocurrency sector and into government circles. Last month, 26 British MPs and members of the House of Lords urged  the foreign secretary to sanction individuals connected to the network identified in Browder’s research. The UK government subsequently took action against several alleged enablers. Russia responded shortly afterward by placing Browder and other British figures on its sanctions list.

Despite the designation, Browder indicated that he intends to continue his work. He argued that fear should not determine how researchers approach investigations involving financial crime and illicit networks. His stance reflects a family history of challenging Russian authorities. Browder is the son of Bill Browder, the anti-corruption campaigner who has spent years exposing Russian financial misconduct and advocating for sanctions against individuals accused of corruption.

Meanwhile, Russia is tightening its oversight of the domestic cryptocurrency sector. Lawmakers are advancing legislation that would prohibit unlicensed crypto platforms beginning in July 2027 while introducing criminal penalties for unauthorized digital asset services. That development highlights a broader contradiction within the country’s digital asset strategy. On one hand, authorities face accusations that crypto-related tools help circumvent international restrictions. On the other hand, regulators continue expanding control over how cryptocurrencies operate inside Russia.
