Boeing announced on Monday that it has temporarily suspended flight tests of its 777X aircraft following the discovery of structural damage on one of the wide-body jets.
The issue was identified during routine maintenance, leading the company to ground all four 777-9 aircraft currently in its test fleet.
According to Boeing, the damage was located in a custom component situated between the engine and the aircraft structure.
The company is now focused on replacing the affected part and assessing the implications of the damage. Boeing has stated that no further flight tests are planned for the remaining 777-9 planes in the fleet at this time.
Boeing plans to resume testing
Boeing emphasized that it will resume flight testing only after the necessary repairs and inspections are completed.
The company has communicated with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and its customers, who have placed orders for a total of 481 777X aircraft.
Boeing’s statement assures that they are working diligently to address the issue and minimize any potential delays.
Uncertainty on certification and delivery schedules
The immediate impact of this grounding on the certification and delivery schedules of the 777X remains unclear. The aircraft, which has been delayed by approximately five years, was initially scheduled for delivery in 2025.
Boeing had only recently begun flight testing with the FAA in July, marking a significant step in the aircraft’s development process.
Ongoing challenges amid safety concerns
The timing of this news is particularly significant as Boeing’s leadership, including new CEO Kelly Ortberg, is navigating the company through a series of challenges.
The 777X issue comes on the heels of a safety incident earlier in the year, when a doorplug blowout raised further concerns.
Boeing reported a nearly 90% jump in its net loss for the quarter ending June 30, compared to the same period last year with lower commercial delivery volumes and losses in defense development programs.
Boeing’s efforts to overcome these setbacks and restore confidence in its aircraft are now being tested by this latest development.
