Former Australian Rugby League player Trent Merrin has been arrested and charged with allegedly stealing $140,000 in cryptocurrency. Law enforcement officials accused him of employing deceptive methods to steal funds from a victim’s crypto wallet without authorization.
The incident further adds to the growing menace of reported fraud in the crypto space and the vulnerabilities associated with digital asset security. The case remains under investigation as authorities seek to address the implications of such fraudulent activities.
Embroiled in $140K Crypto Fraud
The NSW Police Cybercrime Squad began investigating a theft case in November 2024. A 29-year-old man reported that $140,000 in Bitcoin was missing from his wallet.
Detectives discovered suspicious transactions linked to Merrin’s personal crypto account. Merrin was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station after a raid at his home. Several electronic devices were also seized for analysis.
The police accuse Merrin of using tricks to bypass wallet security. However, while investigators believe the theft was a spontaneous act and not planned, court records indicate that a significant Bitcoin transfer occurred in late 2024. The money moved through several wallets before reaching Merrin’s account. Police tracked the blockchain trail, despite attempts to conceal it.
The former rugby player was charged with dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception. He faces the maximum penalty of ten years in prison if convicted. Authorities have placed bail conditions that limit his access to digital assets and require him to appear in court.
A Star in the Mud
Merrin played 270 NRL games for St George Illawarra, Penrith, and Leeds. He won the 2010 premiership with the Dragons, started for the NSW Blues in 2011, and played eight Origin matches, also representing Australia in four World Cup Tests. He retired in mid-2021 to focus on his family and business interests.
After football, Merrin gained popularity in the crypto investment sector, promoting blockchain education on social media and at local seminars. He co-founded a cold plunge therapy studio in Wollongong to help athletes with recovery and mental wellness.
People reacted with disbelief on social media about the charges against Merrin. Meanwhile, Merrin has not made any public comments since his arrest. The case will return to Port Kembla Local Court in four weeks. So far, there are no other suspects. The investigation continues as they wait for the results from the device analysis.
