Loyal fans were missing on concerts for over 2 years due to COVID-restrictions. Above article lively reminded me again why Ticketmaster is one of the most hated companies in the world. I wish them a quick bankruptcy. Loyal fans bought tickets for a concert and the concert dates were rescheduled several times due to COVID (OK) but TicketMaster failed to manage quick and smooth entrance to the concert while using their DIGITAL MOBILE ticketing solution. People tweeting about missing out on the concert and standing in line for the box office for hours.. absurd!!
unbelievable been in box office line for 1 hr tickets that I have had for 2.5 years not valid. Have missed 30 mins so far. Another hour in line inexcusable.
Current technology should make it easier not harder to see your favorite artist, join your favorite venue, etc.
The ticketing industry thrives on its opaque foundation and is one of the major problems. There are a few behemoths like TicketMaster/LiveNation that control the majority of the market. To be able to disrupt this industry it is important to target the foundation of its system and be able to reach the masses, not only from a consumer perspective but also from a ticketing business perspective.
How can blockchain technology improve the ticketing industry?
- Blockchains are transparent and immutable. Scammy practices such as direct selling on secondary markets or selling huge amounts of tickets to professional scalpers will be visible to fans
- Smart contracts can be programmed with a maximum resale price or maximum mark-up from the original price
- Blockchain cut out the middle men allowing artist to sell more directly to fans
- Tickets can include a royalty fee for artists, when tickets are sold resold (similar to royalty fees on NFT art).
- NFT tickets become tradeable digital collectibles, allowing artists to interact with their fans even after the event
There are many businesses working on implementing NFT ticketing. Especially in the last few months every few weeks another business popped up, which in itself is already an endorsement of the use case. The use case is not new though, about 5-6 projects started in 2016/2017 but most have either pivoted or stopped altogether. While NFT ticketing does sound pretty straightforward there are currently various types of implementations or ideas:
The only type that is able to gain rapid market share and accelerate while expanding (the snowball effect) is the one project that aims to provide a ticketing protocol in a seamless user experience similar to the current way of buying tickets. For me, this is an important differentiator compared to any other NFT ticketing projects.
There is only one business providing such protocol and they have demonstrated in the past it's not that hard to provide excellent customer experience when concerts need to be moved:

R.I.P. Ticketsmaster. I hope we will soon be able to buy tickets for our favourite artists without ridiculous ticket fees.
