Luce (LUCE), a Solana memecoin inspired by the cartoon mascot for the Catholic Holy Year, has surged by more than 80% in the last 24 hours. According to data from CoinGecko, the token is exchanging hands at $0.01712 at the time of writing.

The token’s 24-hour trading volume is up by over 519% to more than $46 million. This reflects increased interest and a rise in market activity. Moreover, Luce’s market cap currently exceeds $17 million while its fully diluted valuation is approximately $17 million.

Although LUCE’s recent price surge has made it one of the most attractive assets in the crypto market today, the token is trading 94.58% below its all-time high of $0.3191 and 206.18% above its lowest price of $0.005654. Over the past week, the token has decreased by nearly 40%. However, it has seen a significant boost following a major development.

Why is LUCE (LUCE) Surging?

LUCE’s significant price surge comes following the death of the Catholic Pope. On April 12th, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis, whose real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, had passed away at the age of 88. He battled with double pneumonia, which likely contributed to his death.

Pope Francis served as the Pope of the Catholic Church since 2013.  Just a day prior, he made his first public appearance since being discharged from a 38-day hospital stay for pneumonia. On Easter Sunday, he offered a special blessing.

Following his passing, LUCE saw a sharp increase in its market value, and trading activity for the memecoin rose, leading to a notable rise in its market capitalization. However, like typical memecoins, this rapid surge in market price is often driven by speculative trading and can be highly volatile. Therefore, there is a need for abundant caution while trading or investing in memecoins.

What is LUCE?

Launched on the Solana blockchain via the Pump.fun platform, LUCE is inspired by the Vatican’s official mascot for the Holy Year of 2025. In Italian, the name “Luce” means “light”. This mascot is an anime-style figure with blue hair, a yellow raincoat, and an orange cross necklace.

The memecoin aims to resonate with younger audiences by presenting a modern and approachable image of Christian values. LUCE generated significant attention shortly after its launch. This was evident as its market cap rose to nearly $53 million just a few hours after its debut.

Given that the Vatican is central to Catholicism, the mascot introduced by the Vatican carries special cultural and religious significance. Notably, the appeal of this memecoin stems from its unique blend of religious symbolism, anime, and meme culture. This has captured the attention of the crypto community and prompted rapid adoption and trading activity.

Additionally, early investors in LUCE have seen substantial returns on their investments, which has further fueled its hype. The token has been listed on several crypto exchanges, thus boosting its visibility and relevance in the market. Exchanges that support LUCE include Bybit, BYDFi, and Bitget.

Despite its religious-themed inspiration, LUCE operates as a community-driven meme token without any official affiliation to the Vatican. Its rapid rise underscores the influence of cultural and thematic elements in the cryptocurrency space.
