During an “Ask Me Anything” session on February 20, 2025, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, expressed his concerns regarding a “moral inversion” within the crypto industry. This, especially in light of the criticisms directed at Ethereum for its stance on blockchain-based gambling.

The Ethereum Foundation “bad and intolerant”? Buterin’s scathing response

Vitalik Buterin shared his disappointment at the accusations that Ethereum is “bad and intolerant” due to its lack of support for blockchain casinos. He pointed out that other chains willingly accept any application, including gaming platforms, which, according to some, would make them superior. This perspective, according to Buterin, represents an inversion of values.

He also warned that if the crypto community adopted this “moral reversal,” he would no longer wish to participate. However, Vitalik Buterin found comfort in his in-person interactions with community members. He expressed his commitment to them, stating that he could not abandon them and that he had a responsibility to contribute to the creation of the world they wish to see emerge.

To achieve this goal, Buterin suggested that the Ethereum Foundation might need to adjust its funding approach. Rather than maintaining complete neutrality at the application level, the foundation might choose to support certain types of projects aligned with the values and goals of the Ethereum community.

Ethereum’s ambitions in 2025

This statement comes as Vitalik Buterin has a significant agenda for Ethereum this year, with numerous projects. Notably, improving layer 2 solutions to increase scalability, implementing the upcoming Pectra update in March to redefine the foundations of the network, and developing tools like Helios to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of the blockchain.

Vitalik Buterin thus calls for collective reflection to preserve Ethereum’s core values in the face of external pressures. He encourages the community to collaborate to shape an ecosystem aligned with their ideals, while adapting funding strategies to support crypto projects that resonate with this vision.
