ChatGPT Dominates Mobile AI App Revenue
Mobile app ChatGPT continues to see rapid revenue growth. According to Appfigures, iOS and Android users have spent about $2 billion on it since May 2023. That's about 30 times the combined spend on competing apps Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
Since the beginning of 2025, the app has brought in $1.35 billion, which is 673% more than the figure for January–July last year ($174 million). On average, ChatGPT earns about $193 million per month—$25 million more than a year ago.
By comparison, its closest competitor Grok has earned just $25.6 million year-to-date, representing only 1.9% of ChatGPT's revenue. OpenAI's average app install cost is $2.91 globally and $10 in the US, where it generates 38% of all revenue.
Install and Download Trends Set Records
ChatGPT has seen over 690 million total downloads, with 318 million expected in 2025—2.8 times higher than the same period last year. The leading market by installs is India (13.7% of all downloads), followed by the US (10.3%).
According to Appfigures, monthly downloads have grown 180%, from 16 million between January and July 2024 to around 45 million this year. Germany has become the second-largest market by revenue after the US, accounting for 5.3% of all user spending.
While some of the company’s revenue comes from corporate subscriptions and APIs, these figures reflect the popularity of the mobile version of ChatGPT among regular users.
xAI's Grok launched in November 2023 but lacked a mobile app initially, which helps explain the gap, experts say. Grok’s iOS app didn’t arrive until January 2025, and its Android version launched in March.
