South Korea’s Ehwa Womans University joins as the latest Theta customer to leverage Mobile Edge Network

We’re pleased to announce that South Korea’s Ewha Womans University has joined Theta’s growing academic partner network by adopting Theta EdgeCloud Hybrid and Theta’s mobile edge network.

The PAI Lab led by Assistant Professor Junhyug Noh based in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at Ewha Womans University, is focused on building AI technologies that are practical, adaptable, and effective in diverse real-world scenarios. The lab’s research spans object recognition, including detection and segmentation, as well as weakly and semi-supervised learning approaches that reduce the reliance on labeled data. Additional areas of focus include domain adaptation and robust learning methods that enhance model performance under distribution shifts, along with active learning strategies that improve data efficiency. The lab also works extensively on multi-modal learning and AI + X applications, such as medicine, surveillance, and process automation.

“Theta EdgeCloud Hybrid gives our lab the flexibility to run large-scale experiments across diverse GPU configurations, including both high-end H100s and cost-efficient community GPUs, and we’re also intrigued by Theta’s mobile Android GPUs for object detection, segmentation,” said Prof. Junhyug Noh. “This allows us to pursue rapid model iteration and multi-modal AI research without being constrained by infrastructure limitations.”

Why PAI Lab Selected EdgeCloud Hybrid

Theta EdgeCloud Hybrid is the world’s first decentralized hybrid GPU platform, combining thousands of distributed community-run NVIDIA GPUs (30/40/50 series), high-end NVIDIA GPUs such as A100s and H100s, as well as AWS next-generation Inferentia and Trainium AI chips. This hybrid infrastructure enables academic teams such as the PAI Lab to run large and small scale experiments with greater flexibility, lower costs, and shorter setup times compared to traditional cloud providers. EdgeCloud empowers researchers to train large language models, perform causal and reinforcement learning simulations, and deploy generative AI workloads easily and cost effectively.

Of particular interest, Ewha Womans University department of AI was intrigued by Theta’s existing network of thousands mobile edge nodes running on Android GPUs. Their lab is focused on object recognition, including detection and segmentation, as well as weakly and semi-supervised learning, domain adaptation, robust learning, active learning, and multi-modal learning. Prof Noh’s team is looking forward to exploring the possibilities of leveraging Theta’s mobile edge network.

By adopting Theta EdgeCloud Hybrid, the PAI Lab gains the compute capacity and flexibility necessary to accelerate its mission of developing AI systems that learn and adapt in dynamic and unpredictable environments.

“We’re excited to partner with Prof. Noh and the PAI Lab at Ewha Womans University, whose work is pushing the boundaries of real-world AI,” said Mitch Liu, CEO and Co-Founder of Theta Labs. “Theta EdgeCloud Hybrid and our mobile Android edge network currently in beta was built exactly for this type of research. Theta is the only fully decentralized that enables scalable, high-impact experimentation that traditional cloud providers can’t support cost-effectively or flexibly enough. We look forward to supporting the PAI Lab’s breakthroughs in practical AI.”

About Ewha Womans University

Ewha Womans University, founded in 1886 in Seoul, is the world’s largest women’s university and one of South Korea’s most prestigious private research institutions. Established as the first modern educational institution for Korean women, Ewha now enrolls over 20,000 students across undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is renowned for academic excellence across disciplines including AI, life sciences, international studies, and engineering, and is home to the innovative Department of Artificial Intelligence. Ewha’s global reputation is further strengthened by extensive international partnerships and a legacy of producing trailblazing women leaders in government, academia, and industry.
