Legal Battle Ends in Guilty Verdict
The enforcement agency has charged Ikilo with one count of stealing. During his initial appearance before Justice Aziegbemhin at the Edo State High Court in Benin City, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
The plea resulted in a full trial, during which prosecutors presented evidence connecting Ikilo to the theft of $19,400 in bitcoin. The court carefully evaluated all testimonies and exhibits before delivering its verdict. After finding Ikilo guilty, the judge imposed a prison sentence.
The case focused solely on the misappropriation of digital assets, with no additional charges filed against Ikilo. Investigators from the commission traced the stolen Bitcoin using blockchain records and traditional forensic methods. However, details regarding the sentencing, including any fines or restitution, are still pending official disclosure.
EFCC Tightens Grip on Crypto Crimes
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operates across multiple states in the country to tackle financial crimes effectively. In a similar case that happened in September 2025, the financial watchdog charged 26-year-old Godslove Munachiso Obiwuru with involvement in a cryptocurrency scam.
The case originated from an incident in 2022, when a U.S. citizen’s Coinbase account was reportedly hacked, resulting in the theft of 90,410.126 Gold Retriever Tokens, valued at approximately $307,394 at the time. These apprehensions demonstrate that the agency is serious about prosecuting those who break the law.
The EFCC uses both advanced technology and traditional investigation methods to recover stolen assets and build strong cases. As digital assets become more popular in Nigeria, it is essential to have enforcement actions like this to help build trust in the changing financial landscape.
