Bitcoin BIP Editor Luke Dashjr Under Fire as BIP110 Controversy Escalates

The disagreement over Bitcoin’s BIP-110 has intensified after developer Mark Erhardt, also known as Murch, formally called for the removal of Luke Dashjr from Bitcoin’s BIP Editors. The dispute follows the failed push to activate BIP-110, which caused enforcing nodes to separate from Bitcoin’s main chain during a recent mandatory signaling.

Murch claims that Dashjr has been inconsistent in how he uses his editorial power. The issue now involves technical arguments about blockchain data, questions about the governance of BIP Editors, and worries about how Bitcoin coordinates its consensus.

BIP-110 Fails to Gain Miner Support

BIP-110, also called the Reduced Data Temporary Softfork, aims to temporarily limit how users can add extra data to transactions. Supporters believe these limits will decrease unnecessary clutter in the blockchain caused by Ordinals, BRC-20, and similar activities while keeping Bitcoin’s main function intact.

To pass, the proposal needed 55% of miners to show support, but backing stayed low, between 2% and 2.6%, until mandatory rules took effect at block 961632. After enforcement started, nodes that followed BIP-110 rejected blocks that did not have the required support, leading to a split in the chain while most miners continued to use Bitcoin. 

Roughnecks, linked to Ocean’s DATUM system, mined two blocks on the smaller chain before it stalled due to Bitcoin’s mining difficulty and hashing power. The situation highlighted the difference between enforcing rules through nodes and having enough mining power to maintain a chain.

Since the smaller chain relied on Bitcoin’s SHA-256d difficulty, its limited mining group had a hard time producing new blocks after those early successes. Some supporters began to talk about changing the proof-of-work algorithm for the smaller chain to lessen reliance on established Bitcoin miners.

Murch Calls for Dashjr’s Removal

Murch suggested removing Dashjr from the BIP Editors on Bitcoin’s development mailing list. He raised concerns about BIP-110, claiming its number was assigned too early and that the review process was skipped. In response, Dashjr denied the accusations, saying:

“These are false accusations. I have followed the BIP process consistently for years. Your novice opinions alone do not establish new processes. You are the one who stopped communicating, not I. You are the one who should be removed.”

The events have caught the attention of notable figures in the crypto world. Michael Saylor talked about the failure of BIP-110, saying it shows that Bitcoin works as it should. Meanwhile, other developers have joined the discussion, debating whether formal action is needed against an editor involved in the controversy.
