Ethereum News: ETH At $2466 Amid Quantum Risks and Glamsterdam Testing

Ethereum is back in the headlines for two very different reasons today. Researchers have published new findings on how artificial intelligence could someday speed up quantum attacks on major blockchains, while core developers are wrestling with a bumpy testing process ahead of the Glamsterdam upgrade

Meanwhile, the price of ETH has stayed fairly steady, trading close to $2,466. Here's a plain-language look at what's happening and why it matters.

Ethereum Quantum Research Cuts Bitcoin and ETH Attack Resource Needs by Over 50%

A group of researchers tied to the Ethereum Foundation, Theta Labs, StarkWare, and other organizations has released a paper showing how AI-driven programming agents were used to fine-tune the core math behind Shor's algorithm, the quantum method most commonly discussed as a theoretical threat to blockchain cryptography.

According to the paper, this optimization cuts the computing resources needed for a potential quantum attack on the secp256k1 system used by Bitcoin and Ethereum by more than half compared with a benchmark Google published back in March.

The team says the number of logical qubits required for such an attack has dropped to 1,151, and later refinements pushed that figure down further to 813. These are large, theoretical numbers, and nothing close to what today's quantum machines can actually deliver.

What the AI-Optimized Quantum Research Means for Ethereum

It's worth being clear here: no existing quantum computer is anywhere near powerful enough to break Ethereum or Bitcoin's cryptography today. What this research really shows is that pure software and algorithmic improvements, aided by AI, can shrink the gap faster than expected on paper.

The researchers behind the study are using this as a call to action rather than an alarm bell, stressing that quantum-resistant upgrades for blockchains take a long time to design, test, and roll out, and that some of that work cannot simply be undone later.

Their message is that the industry should start preparing defenses well before quantum hardware catches up to the theory.

Ethereum Glamsterdam Upgrade Tentatively Set for October 6 on Sepolia

On the network upgrade side, minutes from the ACDC #186 developer call show that Ethereum engineers have penciled in October 6 at 13:53 UTC as the target date to activate the Glamsterdam upgrade on the Sepolia testnet. It's important to note this is a tentative plan for a public testnet, not a confirmed mainnet rollout.

Devnet-10 Becomes the Key Test Before the Sepolia Upgrade

The reason for the caution is that a stable developer testnet, or devnet, hasn't emerged yet. Devnet-9 launched with a large validator set but has struggled to finalize normally.

Its predecessor, Devnet-8, previously exposed a serious consensus-layer bug, and a separate issue was found in EIP-8037 on the execution layer, requiring updates across client teams.

Developers now plan to launch Devnet-10, and how that network performs will likely determine whether the October 6 Sepolia date sticks or gets pushed back.

Ethereum Glamsterdam Mainnet Launch Still Has No Confirmed Date

Beyond Sepolia, timelines get even less certain. Developers haven't set dates for the Hoodi testnet or for mainnet activation. A December mainnet launch remains the hope, matching last year's pace when Fusaka shipped on schedule, but nothing in current client readiness suggests that goal is locked in yet.

Ethereum Glamsterdam Timeline: Devnet Testing to Potential Mainnet Launch

Devnet-8 to Devnet-9 to Devnet-10, then Sepolia on October 6 (tentative), followed by Hoodi at a date still to be determined, with an unconfirmed mainnet target sometime in December.

Ethereum ETH Price Today: Trades Near $2,466

On the market side, ETH is priced at $2,465.80 today, down about 0.3% over the past 24 hours. Trading volume came in near $15.99 billion, and Ethereum's market capitalization sits around $300.9 billion.

What These Ethereum Developments Mean for ETH Investors and the Network

Taken together, Ethereum latest news reflects an ecosystem thinking on two timelines at once: the distant but real question of quantum resistance, and the near-term grind of shipping a major protocol upgrade safely. Neither story points to an emergency, but both underline that careful, sometimes slow, engineering work continues behind the scenes of Ethereum price action.
