The Nigerian Central Bureau of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has completed extradition procedures for Binance Holdings executive Nadeem Anjarwalla, who is sought after fleeing Nigeria. During a televised interview on the local “Sunrise Daily” program on April 30, the head of Nigeria’s Interpol, Garba Umar, disclosed that the bureau is coordinating with multiple countries to enforce a Red Notice against Anjarwalla.

This effort includes presenting treaties and other required documents to bring Anjarwalla back to Nigeria for trial on charges of money laundering and tax evasion. Umar noted that while he could not confirm Anjarwalla’s current whereabouts, the last known location for him was Kenya. He also mentioned that Interpol had reached out to nations Anjarwalla might have traveled through and had received some information that could not be disclosed publicly.

Anjarwalla had managed to leave Nigeria on a flight from Abuja aboard a Middle Eastern airline, despite his British passport being held by Nigerian authorities.

Meanwhile, Tigran Gambaryan, Anjarwalla’s Colleague, Has Pleaded Not Guilty

After several weeks in detention, Gambaryan’s wife initiated a petition for his release, which garnered 4,161 signatures. His bail hearing is set for May 17. This situation follows Binance’s announcement on March 5 that it would halt all transactions in Nigerian naira and remove naira trading pairs from its platform in late February.

These measures were in response to concerns voiced by the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on February 27, who highlighted suspicious financial activities involving crypto exchanges, including Binance, in the country. Additional information has come to light about the international coordination involved in Anjarwalla’s apprehension.

Authorities in Kenya, where Anjarwalla was found, have cooperated closely with Nigerian officials, leading to his arrest. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), along with Interpol, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Kenya Police Service, have worked together to ensure the quick extradition of Anjarwalla back to Nigeria.

Anjarwalla Is Charged With Laundering Over $35 Million

Other charges include speculation in currency and evading taxes. These charges are part of a broader investigation that has also implicated other Binance executives, underlining the Nigerian government’s resolve to clamp down on financial irregularities linked to the cryptocurrency market. The formal arraignment of Anjarwalla is scheduled to include these charges, highlighting the significant implications for both Anjarwalla and the cryptocurrency industry in Nigeria.

The case has attracted attention due to the large sums involved and the high-profile nature of the individuals and institutions implicated. The international collaboration highlights the global nature of financial crime and the efforts required to tackle these complex issues. The extradition and subsequent legal processes will be closely watched by regulatory bodies and the cryptocurrency industry globally, as they may set precedents for how similar cases are handled in the future.
