FIFA, the international governing body of association football, has deepened its stance in the blockchain ecosystem. A recent update revealed that the association will soon migrate its digital collectible project, FIFA Collect, to a new blockchain dubbed the FIFA Blockchain. According to the development team, this move will potentially help the association grow its digital footprint and offer fans more exciting experiences.

FIFA Collect to Migrate to FIFA Blockchain

FIFA Collect was launched in 2022, around the time the World Cup competition took place in Qatar. The NFT platform allows fans to own digital highlights of famous football moments. At the time, the layer-1 Algorand blockchain hosted the non-fungible token (NFT) project. The L1 network, known for its fast transaction speeds, low fees, and near-instant settlements, recently surpassed 3,000 validator nodes. This helps to boost the network’s decentralization.

However, the football-themed NFT project will migrate to the FIFA Blockchain on May 20th. This blockchain network is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), a computation engine that facilitates smart contracts on the Ethereum network. FIFA aims to “enable new product features, performance improvements, and long-term growth” through the new blockchain network.

By running its own blockchain, FIFA aims to make the buying, selling, trading, and collecting of NFTs smoother and more affordable. It will also give FIFA more freedom to introduce new digital experiences without relying on third-party platforms.

Fans can expect even more exciting NFT rewards, including the chance to get tickets to live football matches and exclusive events like the World Cup Final. FIFA hopes that managing everything in-house will make the experience more reliable and rewarding for football lovers everywhere.

What to Know About the Migration

The switch will affect users in a few ways. After the migration, Algorand-based wallets like Pera and Defly will no longer work with FIFA Collect. Fans must transfer their digital collectibles from these wallets to EVM-supported wallets, such as MetaMask. Users must also re-import their wallets to the new system before the deadline to transfer their football-themed NFTs. A special window will be opened to allow wallet imports just for this purpose.

During the migration, the FIFA Collect will be temporarily shut down for about 12 hours. FIFA promises to notify all users in advance so they can prepare.
