Solana at a Seven-Month High: Why SOL Is Rising Twice as Fast as Bitcoin and What Stakers Should Check

Solana is leading the recovery in the crypto market. According to CoinGecko data, SOL stood at $112.41 on Friday evening, September 18, 2026, 11.5 percent above the previous day. That is the highest level in seven months and almost twice bitcoin's daily gain. For stakers, a technical change arrives on the same day: Solana has shortened the time per block, and that alters how quickly rewards and payouts arrive.

What is documented in this article is the price data, the upgrade and the liquidation figures. Where it turns to the further course of the price, that is an assessment by our editorial team, and we label it as such.

Solana price at a seven-month high: the numbers at a glance

The daily range ran from $100.78 to $112.79. Over one week SOL is up 10 percent, over 30 days a good 37 percent. Market capitalization comes to around $66 billion, which puts Solana in seventh place. Trading volume over the past 24 hours was around $6.1 billion. Despite the rally, SOL is still more than 60 percent away from its all-time high of $293.31 from January 2025.

Why is Solana rising more strongly than bitcoin?

Three factors come together. The first concerns the whole market: on September 17 the US futures regulator CFTC sent two rule proposals for crypto markets to the White House for review, two days after the CLARITY Act failed in the Senate. That noticeably turned the mood.

The second factor is mechanical. According to CoinDesk, short positions worth around $470 million were forcibly closed within 24 hours. Short sellers who had bet on falling prices with leverage had to buy back. That amplifies moves especially in coins such as Solana, on which a lot of leveraged bets are placed.

The third factor is specific to Solana. Tokens from the Solana ecosystem such as Jupiter and Raydium gained 15 to 20 percent according to CoinDesk. Investors are therefore rotating into the whole network, not only into SOL. On top of that comes the upgrade that went live the same day.

Shorter slots, shorter epochs: the upgrade changes the rhythm in which stakers see their rewards.

Solana upgrade: slot time down from 300 to 250 milliseconds

A slot is the time window in which a validator may produce a block. On September 18 Solana lowered the target time for it from 300 to 250 milliseconds. Instead of around 3.3 slots per second there are now four. According to crypto.news, applications thereby receive current data faster, while each slot proportionally carries less work. Total capacity stays essentially the same. The change is part of proposal SIMD-0525, which targets 200 milliseconds in the long run, with no date set for it yet. What users should check in advance is summarized in our article on the shortening of Solana's slot time.

Solana staking: what the shorter epoch changes for stakers

For stakers, one consequence of the upgrade matters more than the speed. On Solana an epoch is the settlement period at the end of which staking rewards are distributed and changes to the stake take effect. Because an epoch consists of a fixed number of slots, it also becomes shorter with shorter slots: according to crypto.news the expected duration falls from around 36 to around 30 hours.

That has two practical consequences. Rewards arrive at shorter intervals, though the annual yield does not change materially, it is only distributed more finely. And unwinding a stake goes faster. Anyone wanting to release their SOL from staking has to wait until the end of the current epoch. That now takes at most around 30 hours instead of 36.

Solana unstaking while the price is rising: plan for the delay

Exactly this delay gets underestimated on days like today. Anyone wanting to sell staked SOL cannot do so immediately, only after the epoch ends. If the price moves sharply in that time, you sell at a different price from the one that prompted you to sell. Liquid staking tokens get around the waiting time because they can be traded on the market, but they bring a risk of their own: their price can deviate from the value of the deposited SOL in hectic phases.

Anyone staking through an exchange should look in the terms to see how long a payout takes there. Some providers observe additional deadlines. Our comparison of staking platforms gives an overview of lock-up periods and conditions.

Solana staking and taxes: what applies to rewards and to a sale

In Germany, staking rewards are income from other services under section 22 number 3 of the Income Tax Act. They are recognized at their market value at the time they accrue, and they stay tax-free up to an exemption limit of 256 euros per year. When the price rises, the taxable value of each new reward rises with it.

For a sale, the usual holding period of one year applies. Since the Federal Ministry of Finance issued its letter on the taxation of crypto assets, it has been settled that staking does not extend the period to ten years. Each reward starts its own one-year period from the day it arrives.

Solana against bitcoin and ethereum: who leads the rally on September 18

The comparison shows how unevenly the recovery is distributed. According to CoinGecko data from Friday evening, bitcoin gained 5.8 percent within 24 hours, ethereum 6.7 percent and XRP 7.2 percent. Solana comes to 11.5 percent, level with Hyperliquid, whose token HYPE reached an all-time high the same day. Measured in bitcoin, one SOL therefore costs around 0.00139 BTC.

For investors weighing the two coins against each other, that ratio says more than the dollar price. If it rises, Solana gains ground on bitcoin; if it falls, bitcoin would have been the better choice. At the end of August SOL had already broken out against bitcoin once, as we described in the article Solana beats bitcoin. Anyone holding both should briefly recalculate the weighting in the portfolio after a week like this, because Solana's share has grown without any action of their own.

Buying Solana after the rise: what to check before you get in

A gain of 11 percent in one day invites a quick purchase. Three checks are worth doing first. First the provider: platforms serving customers in Germany have needed authorization as a crypto-asset service provider under the EU regulation MiCA since the transition period ended in late 2025. Second the order size: anyone buying into a rally does better to spread the entry across several purchases instead of investing everything at the day's high. Third the custody: anyone wanting to hold SOL for longer or stake it themselves needs a wallet whose seed phrase they control.

Which exchanges offer SOL with low fees and EU authorization is shown in our overview of the best crypto exchanges.

Solana price: which levels count now

On the upside the next zone lies in the area around $120, named as resistance in several analyses; we played through the scenarios in our Solana forecast for the $120 mark. On the downside the daily low at around $100 serves as a first point of orientation. If SOL falls back below it, the breakout was probably just a counter-move after the liquidations.

Our assessment: Solana is currently benefiting twice over, from the general recovery and from a rotation into altcoins. Phases like this often end abruptly once bitcoin sets the direction again. Anyone holding SOL should therefore decide in advance at which price they secure profits or limit losses, instead of deciding that under the impression of the day's move.

Solana price and staking: what you take away

  1. Factor in the unstaking. Staked SOL only becomes free at the end of the epoch, now after around 30 hours. You can compare the providers' terms in the staking comparison.
  2. Buy in stages and only at authorized providers. Spread the entry across several purchases and use an exchange with MiCA authorization from the exchange comparison.
  3. Document every staking reward. Each reward counts at its value on the day and starts its own holding period. A crypto tax tool records that automatically.
