The Ethereum ecosystem has entered a new phase in its long-term security journey. The latest move marks a shift as the Ethereum Foundation makes post-quantum (PQ) security its major strategic priority.

According to a recent X post, the Foundation has created a dedicated PQ team led by Thomas Coratger. The team also includes top cryptography experts working on leanVM. This system plays a critical role in Ethereum’s future quantum-resistant design.

Core Developers Push Security Upgrades

Notably, after years of quiet, intense research and development, Ethereum is making waves. The foundation highlighted that the journey began in 2019, with the “Eth3.0 Quantum Security” presentation at StarkWare Sessions.

After that year, it gained momentum in 2024 when post-quantum ideas became central to Ethereum’s broader technical vision. Since then, progress has been rapid, and 2026 is shaping up to be a critical year.

Since then, Ethereum’s PQ engineering has advanced at an extraordinary speed, with major technical breakthroughs happening one after another.

One of the major steps forward is the launch of PQ discussions among the Ethereum core developers. These sessions will explore practical security upgrades, including new cryptographic tools, account abstraction, and advanced transaction signature systems. The primary objective is to make Ethereum safer for users.

Ethereum Prepares Detailed PQ Roadmap

On the technical side, multi-client post-quantum consensus test networks are already running. These networks bring together new and established teams, showing how collaboration is driving Ethereum’s progress. Workshops and global events are also planned to bring experts together and accelerate learning and development in this field.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is also playing a major role in Ethereum’s cryptographic research. Recent experiments show that AI can now solve complex mathematical problems faster and more accurately than ever before. Meanwhile, Ethereum plans to release a detailed PQ roadmap. The move aims for a smooth transition in the future. It also promises no loss of funds and no disruption to the network.

Education is also part of the strategy, with the ZKPodcast preparing a video series on the topic and Ethereum joining the post-quantum advisory board recently announced by Coinbase. Meanwhile, the latest update did not impact the price of ETH. According to CoinGecko, the asset trades at $2,953.53, below the $3,000 mark it traded at last week.
