FIFA, the international governing body of association football, has chosen Avalanche to develop its dedicated Layer1 blockchain for its non-fungible tokens (NFTs). According to a recent blog post, the sports organization will build its blockchain on Avalanche technology, which aims to use its customizable feature to suit FIFA’s needs.

FIFA Taps Avalanche for L1 Blockchain

According to Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex and FIFA Collect, the integration allows FIFA to deploy NFT assets and fan engagement features on an EVM-compatible chain, optimizing for enhanced speed and scalability.

FIFA will transition its NFT marketplace and collection as part of the rollout. The organization also noted that additional initiatives are underway, though specific details have not yet been made public.

Notably, FIFA Collect will discontinue support for Algorand-based wallets like Pera and Defly once the migration is complete. Users will connect via MetaMask or other EMV-compatible wallets through WalletConnect.

The latest development comes after FIFA shared its plans to roll out a new blockchain for its digital collectibles. Built on AvaCloud with EVM compatibility, the network will support seamless interaction with dApps and decentralized wallets across the Ethereum ecosystem.

In November 2024, the organization collaborated with blockchain game developer Mythical Games to release FIFA Rivals, a cross-platform, free-to-play mobile title integrating blockchain-based assets. The title is available on iOS and Android.

FIFA Collect to Migrate to New Blockchain

Meanwhile, FIFA Collect previously launched its NFT collection on the Algorand chain in 2022 for the Qatar World Cup. The development also comes after the launch of Avalanche 9000 mainnet upgrade. Interestingly, the initiative is designed to onboard more developers interested in deploying public chains on the network.

The NFT project was initially deployed on the Algorand L1 blockchain, which offers low transaction costs and high scalability. With validator nodes surpassing 3,000, the protocol has strengthened its decentralized consensus layer.

By launching its own blockchain, FIFA intends to simplify and lower the cost of NFT transactions, including buying, selling, and trading. The move also allows the sports organization to develop and deploy new digital experiences independently without relying on external platforms.

Over the years, NFTs have driven notable growth across industries and influenced business development. It has notably reshaped the digital arts market through remarkable innovation.
