Zcash news turned toward network infrastructure after Valar Group and Project Tachyon released Zakura on July 15. The Zcash crypto full node promised faster synchronization, pruning and Ironwood support.
The release expanded node software options days before the legacy Zcashd client halted. It also offered existing wallets and exchanges a compatible migration route.
Zakura’s developers published benchmark results showing faster performance than Zebra. However, no independent organization has reproduced those tests under separate conditions.
Zcash News Covers Zakura’s Initial Release
Zakura’s official announcement said version 1.0.0 used Zebra’s open-source codebase. Developers described the software as consensus-compatible with existing Zcash rules.

That distinction matters because node implementations can use different code while enforcing identical rules. A disagreement could otherwise place nodes on separate blockchain histories.
The Zakura team said a standard blockchain synchronization finished within four hours and 20 minutes. Zebra completed the published comparison after 20 hours and 46 minutes.
Those results made Zakura’s direct synchronization nearly five times faster during that test. The announcement did not provide complete hardware, bandwidth or processor specifications.
Snapshots shortened the setup period further. An archive snapshot finished within 37 minutes and nine seconds.
The pruned version required one minute and 50 seconds. Developers described that result as 680 times faster than standard peer-to-peer synchronization.
Zakura said its pruned snapshot occupied about 11 gigabytes. Native pruning lets operators configure retained blockchain history and reduce storage requirements.
Zcash News Examines Node Mechanics
The first release reproduced the legacy Zcashd remote procedure call interface through compatibility mode. That interface lets external applications communicate with node software.
Wallets and exchange integrations could therefore retain existing connections while migrating their underlying node. Operators still face testing requirements before using Zakura in production environments.
The official Zcash GitHub repository confirmed that zcashd reached its support halt on July 18. Version 6.20.0 nodes stopped at block 3,417,100 and refused subsequent restarts.
That halt made alternative implementations necessary for operators maintaining Zcash infrastructure. The repository directed users toward Zebra or Zallet, depending on their wallet requirements.

Zakura also introduced an experimental peer-to-peer transport layer. Developers disabled that component by default during the first release.
The team targeted worst-case block propagation below 500 milliseconds. Planned functions also covered mempool aggregation, gossip controls and denial-of-service resistance.
Those features remain engineering targets rather than measured production capabilities. The announcement provided no third-party security assessment for the experimental transport layer.
Product Implications for Zcash Crypto Infrastructure
The Zcash Foundation welcomed Zakura in a July 16 statement. It cited faster initial synchronization, pruning, snapshots and Zcashd compatibility as useful additions.
The Foundation said Zebra’s permissive licenses allowed outside teams to fork and improve its code. It also recommended operating Zebra alongside Zakura for independent consensus checks.
That position treated software diversity as a security mechanism. Separate implementations can identify consensus errors through differential testing and cross-validation.
However, additional software also creates coordination demands. Each implementation must follow protocol updates without producing incompatible block-validation results.
The Foundation said it planned conformance tests covering different Zcash implementations. Those tests would assess compliance with the network’s public protocol specification.
Zakura’s maintainers, Sean Bowe and Dev Ojha, linked the node to broader scaling research. Bowe leads Project Tachyon, while Ojha leads Valar Group.
Project Tachyon’s official overview described its protocol work as a community proposal. The website said network upgrades require community approval before activation.
Zakura’s team targeted a payment throughput exceeding 50,000 transactions each second. It is estimated that existing cryptography would demand over 500 megabytes of node throughput each second.
The developers said Tachyon’s recursive proofs could reduce that requirement to 100 megabytes. These numbers remain internal projections because Tachyon has not entered active consensus rules.
Zcash News Turns Toward Ironwood Activation
Zakura shipped with support for Ironwood, formally called Network Upgrade 6.3. The release positioned Ironwood as its first live network-upgrade test.
The Zcash Foundation’s Zebra 6.0.0 release set activation at block 3,428,143. The Foundation expected mainnet to reach that height around 13:00 UTC on July 28.
Ironwood introduces a separate shielded pool and version-six transaction format. It reuses Orchard actions and the Halo 2 proof system.
The upgrade followed June’s response to a soundness flaw within Orchard’s proof circuit. Security researcher Taylor Hornby discovered the vulnerability during a Shielded Labs audit.
The Zcash Foundation said Network Upgrade 6.2 corrected the circuit on June 3. It found no evidence of exploitation or unauthorized value creation.
Ironwood’s activation will provide the next measurable Zakura milestone. Operators can assess synchronization, compatibility and consensus stability after the network reaches the scheduled block.
