Major leadership changes inside the Ethereum Foundation are reshaping how Ethereum’s core development operations will move forward during a critical period for the network. Several prominent developers are preparing to leave the organization while a newly appointed leadership group takes control of Ethereum’s Protocol division ahead of major upgrades.

According to announcements shared on Monday, longtime Ethereum contributors Barnabé Monnot and Tim Beiko plan to depart the foundation, while Alex Stokes will step away temporarily through a sabbatical. Consequently, the foundation introduced Will Corcoran, Kev Wedderburn, and Fredrik as the new cluster co-leads overseeing Protocol operations.

The restructuring arrives as Ethereum pushes toward its next major scaling phase. Moreover, the leadership transition reflects broader efforts inside the organization to strengthen Ethereum’s technical direction while accelerating work on scalability, security, and network usability. Corcoran confirmed on X that the Protocol cluster is entering a new chapter while continuing development tied to Glamsterdam, Hegotá, and Ethereum’s broader Strawmap roadmap.

Additionally, the incoming leaders already oversee several important Ethereum initiatives. Fredrik currently leads security research efforts, including the Trillion Dollar Security project focused on protecting Ethereum’s long-term infrastructure. Meanwhile, Wedderburn heads zkEVM development work tied directly to Ethereum’s scaling ambitions.

Corcoran has also contributed heavily to zkEVM development alongside research connected to post-quantum security initiatives. The Ethereum Foundation stated that all three leaders previously contributed across multiple internal teams and research clusters.

Ethereum Intensifies Focus on Scaling and Network Security

The latest changes follow a wider transformation effort inside the Ethereum Foundation after internal restructuring initiatives launched last year. Besides leadership adjustments, the organization has expanded investment into Ethereum mainnet scaling, privacy technologies, and developer infrastructure. Protocol teams are currently preparing Ethereum’s upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade, which seeks to increase the gas limit floor to 200 million. Additionally, developers plan to introduce Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation through the same upgrade cycle.

Ethereum researchers are also preparing for the later Hegotá upgrade, which will focus heavily on censorship-resistance improvements. According to the foundation, developers intend to begin rolling out FOCIL prototypes designed to strengthen Ethereum’s decentralized architecture. However, the leadership overhaul also follows growing scrutiny from parts of the Ethereum community earlier this year. Rumors circulated claiming some employees faced pressure to sign controversial loyalty pledges during internal restructuring discussions.

Several notable contributors have also exited the foundation in recent months. Josh Stark departed last month, while Tomasz K. Stańczak stepped down earlier this year despite recently becoming co-executive director. Other developers reportedly joined external blockchain projects, including Tempo. Meanwhile, Monnot indicated that his future interests may center more directly on product-focused Ethereum development. According to comments shared on X, he wants to help make Ethereum’s features more accessible for users and builders across different ecosystems.

Ethereum’s Protocol division remains responsible for coordinating research, cryptography, security, scaling infrastructure, and AllCoreDevs operations. Consequently, the latest leadership transition could heavily influence Ethereum’s next development cycle as competition across blockchain markets continues increasing. The Ethereum Foundation’s latest reshuffle highlights a major transition period for Ethereum’s technical leadership. While several senior contributors prepare to leave, the organization continues prioritizing scaling, security, and censorship resistance ahead of future network upgrades.
