BounceBit, a project bringing centralized and decentralized features into Bitcoin restaking, has announced that it is shutting down its layer-1 network. The reason? A serious exploit that exposed a major weakness.

The vulnerability allowed hackers to transfer about 286.5 million BB tokens worth $3.3 million. The team believes it is better to start afresh rather than try to fix the compromised system.

The Way Forward

Following its latest decision, BounceBit has decided to move its BB tokens to the BNB Chain. From now on, these tokens will exist as BEP-20 assets. As a result, tokens connected to attackers will not be included in the replacement distribution. This means that exploited assets will not be part of the new system.

The plan keeps the recovery process separate from the affected network and gives regular users a clear way to restore their balances. The project has decided to halt its original chain temporarily. Developers found that the issue only affected the BounceBit Chain. Other applications, smart contracts, and vaults remained safe during the response.

Meanwhile, for BounceBit, leaving the original chain is a costly yet necessary step to rebuild trust after the security issue. For the community, however, the change means waiting for the new system to be implemented while hoping that the records of legitimate ownership are kept accurate.

The Million-Dollar Hack

The issue that forced BounceBit’s recent decision involved a security exploit of about 286.5 million BB tokens moved without permission. The problem affected several accounts on the BounceBit main network.

Notably, instead of targeting individual wallets, the issue arose from a failure in the system that controls authorization within the blockchain. This is important because users did not lose their assets due to hacked passwords or stolen private keys. Instead, the flaw allowed unauthorized transactions to happen directly within the network’s token system.

To manage the situation, BounceBit suspended its network activity. Its immediate actions also included stopping block production and limiting BB transfers while they investigated the problem.

The incident serves as a warning for all blockchain users. It shows that even advanced systems can fail if a basic security weakness goes unnoticed.
