Trading tips for beginners?

It's the bear market ... research, yes yes, but also the time to learn trading and mess around with small amounts and get a feel for things. Looks like the best time to learn as it's gonna be relatively slow going for a while ...

I'd be grateful for tips from old salts (I've only been in for 18 months) that don't entail 'don't trade, just HODL'. Looking at basically messing around with shorts/longs and a bit of leverage out in DeFi land (GMX as a starting point) ... anyone got any vibes on this approach?
