The Russian Police has arrested a former chief of Russian Post Office local branch, on suspicion of running a crypto mining farm at work. According to a local news report, the former branch chief managed to mine crypto inside his office for almost 6 months. It is alleged that the suspect used the office’s network in a town of Mineralnye Vody, which is located in the southern part of the country.

The report noted that the suspect is accused of illegally installing professional hardware and mining crypto using the company’s power grid for 6 month. The local authorities behind the investigation were able to trace the activities of the suspect way back September 2019. According to the authorities, the Federal Postal Service Territory suffered damages worth 30,000 Russian rubles through his activities.

The accused will be charged with abuse of power, per the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Meanwhile, investigations are still ongoing, and the identity of the suspect is not disclosed to the media yet. Furthermore, the criminal charges indictment has not yet been filed by the investigative committee.

This is not the first in recent times that the Russian police have reported the arrest of individuals who are illegally mining crypto in the country. In March, they reportedlycaptured crypto miners who stole $200,000 worth of electricity every month to mine crypto. Those criminals hadmanaged to connect their mining rigs directly to the public electricity supply in Saint Petersburg.

The Russian government is however considering tightening the rules surrounding crypto usage in the country. As recently reported, the country’s lawmakers have proposed law that seeks to criminalize crypto usage in the country. Some believe that when this law is passed, it would mean a total ban on crypto in the country.
