Summary

  • Peter Schiff called Bitcoin worthless while using the CLARITY Act’s Senate defeat to reinforce his longstanding criticism of cryptocurrency value.
  • The Senate vote fell short of cloture, leaving cryptocurrency companies without the regulatory framework pursued through lengthy negotiations in Congress.
  • Industry leaders considered regulatory action through federal agencies, while critics welcomed the legislation’s failure and questioned Bitcoin’s legitimacy as money.

Gold advocate Peter Schiff has declared Bitcoin worthless while responding to the CLARITY Act’s failure in the United States Senate. According to Schiff, Congress does not need legislation to determine Bitcoin’s value because its lack of worth remains “very clear.”

His remark targeted a bullish comment from investor Anthony Pompliano and reignited debate surrounding Bitcoin’s legitimacy as a financial asset. Schiff has consistently favored gold while portraying Bitcoin as a speculative instrument without the qualities required for sustainable monetary value.

However, his argument addressed Bitcoin’s valuation rather than the regulatory problems lawmakers sought to resolve through the proposed legislation. The Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act during Tuesday’s procedural vote, delivering a significant setback for cryptocurrency companies.

Supporters needed 60 votes to begin formal debate, but the measure secured 50 votes while 49 senators opposed its advancement. Every Democrat participating in the vote rejected the motion, preventing Republicans from reaching the threshold required to invoke cloture.

The proposal sought clearer federal oversight for digital assets and defined responsibilities for the country’s leading financial regulators. Its failure left cryptocurrency companies without the comprehensive market structure framework they had pursued through several months of negotiations.

Crypto Executives Reassess Regulatory Strategy Following Senate Defeat

Galaxy Digital chief executive Mike Novogratz expressed frustration, arguing that the government appeared broken despite prolonged negotiations between lawmakers. According to Novogratz, approaching United States elections influenced political calculations and made the remaining policy disagreements difficult to resolve.

Coinbase chief executive Brian Armstrong also described the result as disappointing, although he avoided declaring the legislation permanently defeated. Armstrong noted that bipartisan negotiations could resume, giving senators another opportunity to address their outstanding differences surrounding digital asset regulation.

Nevertheless, he argued that cryptocurrency companies can no longer base their entire regulatory strategy on congressional action. Instead, Armstrong believes the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission possess sufficient authority to establish clearer rules.

Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao offered another interpretation, identifying the survival of stablecoin yields as one possible benefit from the outcome. Meanwhile, Representative Brad Sherman welcomed the defeat and emphasized his longstanding opposition to the bill and its previous versions.

Investor Ross Gerber, whose Bitcoin position has become increasingly critical, characterized the Senate result as another failure for the cryptocurrency. Consequently, the vote exposed divisions between lawmakers, cryptocurrency executives, and prominent critics regarding the future of digital asset regulation.

Schiff presented the setback as support for his Bitcoin criticism, while industry executives considered alternative routes toward regulatory clarity. The legislation could return through bipartisan negotiations, although existing political divisions make its immediate revival difficult within the current Senate. Regulators may now face greater industry pressure to clarify cryptocurrency oversight without waiting for another comprehensive agreement from Congress.
