Large crypto wallets are accumulating Tether Gold (XAUT) tokens worth millions of dollars even as the spot gold price drops over 20% from its January all-time high.

The whale activity coincides with Tether’s announcement that XAUT now runs natively on BNB Chain, bringing tokenized gold access to one of the largest blockchain ecosystems.

Gold Drops Below $4,500 While Whales Stack XAUT

Gold hit $5,589 per ounce in late January 2026, its highest level ever. By March 27, the price had fallen to $4,447, a decline of more than 20% in under two months.

A stronger US dollar, rising Treasury yields at 4.40%, and forced liquidations among leveraged futures traders drove the selloff.

Portfolio rebalancing by institutional investors and profit-taking after gold’s 64% rally in 2025 added further pressure.

However, on-chain data tells a different story on the tokenized gold front. Blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain flagged two large withdrawals on March 27.

  • Wallet 0x5b1d pulled 2,000 XAUT worth $8.78 million off exchanges eight hours before the post.
  • A separate wallet, 0x49dd, withdrew 800 XAUT valued at $3.55 million from OKX roughly 15 hours earlier.

Combined, the two wallets moved over $12.3 million in tokenized gold into self-custody.

Exchange withdrawals of this size typically signal accumulation rather than selling intent. Moving tokens off centralized platforms removes them from the available trading supply.

Tether Gold Expands to BNB Chain

The whale accumulation on BNB Chain. Each XAUT token represents one fine troy ounce of physical gold held in Swiss vaults as a London Good Delivery bar, with 1:1 backing confirmed by independent attestations.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino framed the listing as a way to close the gap between institutional gold ownership and everyday crypto users.

“With XAU₮, we are not changing what gold is; we are making it usable in a modern financial system. You still have direct exposure to physical gold, but now it can move instantly, settle globally, and integrate seamlessly with digital markets,” read an excerpt in the announcement, citing Ardoino.

XAUT now operates across 12+ chains through the USDt0 network, a cross-chain infrastructure layer built for issuing, transferring, and settling tokenized gold.

Nina Rong, Executive Director of Growth at BNB Chain, said the listing extends what is already the second-largest Real World Asset (RWA) ecosystem by total value locked.

TG Commodities, the issuer behind XAUT, holds a registered Stablecoin Issuer license under El Salvador’s Digital Asset Issuance Law. Full reserve details and vault transparency reports are published at gold.tether.to.

Tokenized Gold Market Grows as Traditional Gold Corrects

The gold-backed stablecoin market expanded from approximately $1.3 billion to over $4 billion during 2025. XAUT captured roughly 60% of the total supply across that period, according to Tether’s own disclosure.

XAUT currently holds a market capitalization of roughly $2.5 billion with a circulating supply of about 560,000 tokens. Trading volume hit $849 million over the past 24 hours, per CoinGecko.

Meanwhile, institutional forecasters remain bullish on gold’s medium-term trajectory despite the correction. Justin Lin, investment strategist at Global X ETFs, maintained a $6,000 per ounce base case for year-end. J.P. Morgan’s 2026 target sits at $6,300.

If those targets hold, the current selloff may represent exactly the kind of entry point the whales are betting on.
