Something shifted in the crypto market today, and traders noticed within minutes. Prices moved, liquidations piled up, and a handful of coins nobody was watching yesterday suddenly became the biggest story on trading screens. If you're asking what happened in crypto market today, here's the short version: small surges, big regulatory headlines out of Russia and Canada, a fresh Binance and Circle partnership, and an early warning sign about where the market heads next.

Key Takeaways

  • The global crypto market cap sits at $3.02 trillion today, up just 0.4% in 24 hours, with Bitcoin dominance holding at 57%, according to CoinGecko data.

  • 91,818 traders got liquidated in the past 24 hours for a total of $293.85 million, and shorts lost more than longs, per CoinGlass data.

  • Binance is putting $100 million into Circle, Canadian banks are testing tokenized deposits, and Russia just clarified who eats the loss if a stablecoin issuer freezes funds.

Why Is Crypto Up Today? The Market Cap Story

You'd expect a day full of this much news to move the market hard. It didn't, at least not at the top level. The global cryptocurrency market cap today is $3.02 trillion, a mild 0.4% change in the last 24 hours, according to CoinGecko data. Total trading volume across the whole market sat at $120 billion for the day.

Bitcoin dominance is at 57%, meaning more than half of all money in crypto still sits in Bitcoin alone. Ethereum dominance is at 11%. That split tells you where the real action was today: not at the top of the market, but further down, in smaller coins that don't need much money to move a lot.

Top Crypto Gainers and Losers: Who Lead The Surge?

Three small tokens ran far ahead of the rest of the market today:

No single official reason has been confirmed for these moves. What the numbers do show is that all three are small cap, thinly traded tokens, so it doesn't take much fresh buying to push prices up fast.

Same story here in reverse. Low volume tokens can fall just as fast as they rise once sellers step in.

Crypto Market Liquidation Today: $293.85 Million Wiped Out

The past 24 hours weren't gentle on leveraged traders. A total of 91,818 traders were liquidated, and the total liquidation value hit $293.85 million, according to CoinGlass data. Shorts took the bigger hit, losing $168.23 million against $125.62 million in long liquidations.

Crypto Liquidation data

The single largest order happened on OKX, on the BTC-USDT-SWAP pair, worth $4.84 million. A short-heavy liquidation split like this usually means traders were betting on a drop right before prices ticked up, and they got squeezed out fast.

Russia Warns Crypto Investors Over Frozen Stablecoins

Russia's Ministry of Finance sent a clear signal today. Deputy Finance Minister Ivan Chebeskov said that if a foreign stablecoin issuer freezes assets like USDT or USDC for reasons outside a Russian depository's control, the resulting loss falls on the investor, not the intermediary holding the asset. He made the comments at the Moscow Financial Forum, as reported by TASS.

This lands as Russia works toward its first full framework for regulating digital currencies. To be clear, this is a rule about how future risk gets divided, not a report that USDT or USDC have actually been frozen for Russian holders.

Binance Turns Its Funding Account Into A Stocks Account

Binance is making a structural change. Starting September 29, 2026, Binance will begin moving crypto market today from user Funding Accounts into Spot Accounts, a process expected to run through January 2027. After that, the Funding Account gets fully rebranded as the "Stocks Account," used only for clearing and settling equities and stock options. On-chain deposits into Funding Accounts stop on September 29.

The renamed Stocks Account will support six settlement assets: USD, USDC, USDT, USD1, U, and BNB. Every other crypto deposit and withdrawal routes through Spot Accounts instead. Users can move their own funds early through a "One-Click Migration" tool, and anything left over gets shifted automatically in batches starting January 2027, according to Wu Blockchain data.

Binance Invests $100 Million In Circle To Expand USDC Deal

Circle disclosed in a September 22 filing that its subsidiaries signed a new five-year agreement with Binance on September 17, replacing older deals from November 2024 and August 2025. Under the new terms, Circle pays Binance monthly incentive fees tied to USDC held through Circle's Modular Smart Contract Wallet service, while Binance runs extra USDC promotions on its platform.

On the same day, Binance bought 1,237,011 shares of Circle's Class A stock at a discounted $80.84 per share, a $100 million purchase that has already closed. Those shares carry a two-year transfer restriction, with a few early termination exceptions, as per Circle's official post.

Canadian Banks Build A Tokenized Deposit Network

Six of Canada's largest banks confirmed a joint tokenized deposit project built for 24/7 blockchain payments across the country. The confirmation came through an official BMO Newsroom release dated September 22, 2026, making it one of the largest coordinated tokenized deposit efforts anywhere so far.

As of today, this stays an exploratory initiative rather than a live consumer product, but it's already one of the most talked-about items in crypto market today.

CME Group To Launch Bitcoin Cash And Uniswap Futures

CME Group announced plans to launch Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Uniswap (UNI) futures on October 19, pending regulatory review. Both will come in standard and micro sizes: 250 BCH and 25 BCH contracts for Bitcoin Cash, and 10,000 UNI and 1,000 UNI contracts for Uniswap.

This adds to CME's existing lineup of BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, ADA, LINK, XLM, AVAX, and SUI futures, a lineup that already moved 279,800 contracts a day on average in the first half of 2026, worth about $8.3 billion in notional value, as per CME Group.

What Next For The Crypto Market? September 24 Catalysts

Today's meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping is set to shape the crypto market's next move. The talks cover trade, investment, AI, the war in Iran, and Taiwan, and the market has already reacted, with the total market cap slipping after touching $3.06 trillion earlier today.

Two more catalysts land on September 24.

  • The Meridian upgrade activates regulated real-world-asset issuance and unified tokenized perpetual markets for Injective, backed by an effective SEC transfer agent registration, which could put fresh eyes on INJ as a settlement asset for compliant onchain assets.

  • Separately, Telcoin (TEL) starts its v2-to-v3 migration on September 24, the entry point to a new token ahead of the Telcoin Network mainnet, forcing holders and exchanges to swap and reposition.
