ETH is facing a fresh test after one of its largest market makers moved a nine-figure sum onto exchanges in a matter of hours.

Wintermute deposited 61,847 ETH, worth roughly $160.3 million, into Binance and Coinbase between 13:15 and 16:15 UTC on September 11, 2026.

The transfers moved from a single hot wallet, tagged and verified by Arkham Intelligence, in a rapid sequence of individual transactions ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 ETH each.

A Deposit Isn’t Automatically a Sell Order

A deposit from Wintermute doesn’t automatically mean a sale is coming.

The firm runs continuous two-sided inventory across venues as one of crypto’s largest liquidity providers, and transfers like this can reflect inventory rotation, client settlement, or derivatives hedging just as easily as directional selling.

What is verifiable is the scale and timing: this landed right as US CPI data hit the market, sending ETH briefly to an intraday high of $2,667 before it reversed sharply.

$758 Million Got Liquidated in the Aftermath

The reversal triggered real damage across leveraged positions. Derivatives markets logged $758.02 million in forced liquidations over 24 hours, with Ether alone accounting for $307.48 million of that total.

In a tighter four-hour window around the Wintermute transfers, 92% of forced closures hit long positions, $126.99 million worth, compared to just $10.23 million in shorts, according to CoinGlass’s liquidation data

CoinGlass’s liquidity-distribution metrics show the next real test zones clearly marked: a drop below $2,417 would expose roughly $1.123 billion in long positions, while a break above $2,669 would trigger an estimated $844 million in short liquidations.

BlackRock Kept Buying Through the Noise

Institutional buying didn’t stop during this stretch. BlackRock’s ETHA fund bought $13.9 million worth of ETH in the same session, bringing its total purchases to $251.4 million over 20 trading days.

Techgaged tracked a similar tug-of-war earlier this year, when ETH whale accumulation addresses kept adding aggressively even as short-term volatility shook out leveraged traders.

Reading This Week’s Chart

ETH traded at $2,529.68 on September 12, 2026, up 2.9% over seven days. The chart shows the shape of this whole episode.

Price held steady near $2.45K to $2.50K through most of the week, dipped toward $2.40K around September 10 and 11, then spiked sharply to $2.63K before settling back to $2,529.68.

Techgaged also tracked the network’s tightening supply backdrop this year, noting how roughly half of all ETH sits locked in staking, a dynamic that makes deposits of this size carry more weight than they might have during looser liquidity conditions.

The Next 96 Hours Matter

The September 16 FOMC meeting is the next major catalyst, and how ETH handles the $2,417 and $2,669 liquidation zones between now and then will likely determine whether this week’s volatility resolves into a genuine breakout or another failed test of resistance.
