Zcash’s Private Payments Could Scale Dramatically

Zcash is trading near $1,461, down 10.1% over the past seven days after pulling back from recent highs above $1,650.

While the short-term price action has softened, developers are advancing work that could significantly expand the network’s capacity for private transactions.

Udon Targets the Next Scaling Step

Zcash developers have released Udon, a component aimed at the network’s proposed scaling upgrade.

The release forms part of the broader Project Tachyon effort, which carries a long-term target of supporting 50,000 private transactions per second.

That would represent a major increase in potential throughput and could give shielded activity a much larger capacity ceiling.

Privacy-focused networks have historically faced a difficult balance between strong confidentiality and practical performance.

Work on Udon and Tachyon is aimed at addressing that constraint by increasing the number of private transactions the network could eventually handle.

TechGaged has previously examined Zcash’s growing use of shielded pools, noting that more than 30% of ZEC was held in shielded pools earlier this year.

Price Digests Recent Gains

The seven-day chart shows Zcash retreating from a local peak near $1,700. After a strong advance, selling pressure returned and price has settled around the mid-$1,400s.

The decline has been relatively orderly, consistent with a market cooling after a significant run rather than automatically pointing to a structural breakdown.

Meanwhile, the development work continues independently of short-term price movements.

TechGaged recently reported that ZEC had climbed above $1,650 before pulling back, while Grayscale’s Zcash fund crossed $1 billion in assets under management.

Why Higher Throughput Matters

Private payments remain one of Zcash’s core use cases. If the network eventually moves closer to the 50,000 TPS target, greater capacity could make shielded transactions more practical for applications that require both privacy and speed.

Higher throughput could also create room for more applications to use the privacy infrastructure without putting the same pressure on network capacity.

The path will not be immediate, however. Moving from a long-term target to consistently demonstrated performance requires testing, implementation and real-world usage.

Scaling Ambition Meets Market Reality

Zcash’s price has given back some recent gains, but development around privacy and scalability continues to shape the longer-term story.

The network is also preparing for other major changes. TechGaged recently reported on the planned NU7 upgrade, which could affect funds remaining in Zcash’s original Sprout shielded pool after the upgrade activates.

Udon and Project Tachyon therefore represent one part of a broader development cycle.

The key test will be whether these upgrades eventually translate into measurable improvements in throughput, privacy usage and network activity.

For now, the 50,000-private-transactions-per-second goal remains an ambitious target, but the latest development work shows that Zcash is continuing to build toward a more scalable private-payment system.
