Gemini co-founder Tyler Winklevoss sees similarities between Zcash’s renewed market enthusiasm and the sentiment surrounding cryptocurrencies in 2019. According to Winklevoss, the mood around Zcash resembles a period when the broader industry rebuilt confidence following a difficult downturn. His observation comes amid ZEC’s substantial rally and Gemini’s growing involvement with the privacy network.
Bitcoin entered 2019 carrying the effects of the 2018 bear market, which followed the speculative boom of 2017. Prices remained depressed, while retail enthusiasm weakened considerably across the cryptocurrency market.
According to CoinGecko’s historical data, Bitcoin traded near $3,693 on January 1, 2019, before approaching $13,000 in late June. However, the cryptocurrency surrendered part of that recovery and entered 2020 at approximately $7,195.
Meanwhile, industry participants worked on institutional trading infrastructure and custody services despite the market’s uneven recovery throughout that year. Winklevoss’s comparison suggests similar enthusiasm around Zcash, although it does not establish a matching price trajectory.
Zcash has operated since 2016, making its resurgence a return of interest in an established network rather than a new launch. Its technology uses zero-knowledge proofs to validate transactions while allowing users to protect sensitive financial details.
Nevertheless, privacy cryptocurrencies have faced obstacles, including exchange removals linked to regulatory concerns about their transaction-shielding features. Those challenges provide an important backdrop to Zcash’s renewed appeal among investors and privacy advocates.

Zcash’s Rally and Gemini’s Integrations Frame Winklevoss’s Comparison
ZEC’s performance during 2026 shows how substantially market interest changed, although the recovery included several considerable setbacks along the way. The token entered January near $511 before declining, while February brought an approximately 27% monthly loss and prices near $191. Subsequently, ZEC gained more than 60% in May, reaching above $680 before finishing the month around $565.
August delivered another substantial advance, with Zcash climbing approximately 85% from around $457 to roughly $848 during the month. September extended those gains, taking ZEC above $1,000 and then to $1,335.51 on September 16.
Alongside that recovery, Gemini expanded a relationship that began with regulatory approval for Zcash trading and custody in 2018. New York’s financial regulator approved the offering, making Gemini the first licensed exchange to provide those services.
Additionally, Gemini introduced Unified Address support in August 2025 and added compatibility with the Orchard privacy protocol three months later. The exchange then launched a dedicated Zcash credit card on January 27, adding another product tied to the cryptocurrency.
On September 29, Gemini announced that its infrastructure for interacting with the Zcash blockchain now runs on Zakura. The open-source full node provides another infrastructure development alongside the exchange’s trading, custody, and payment-related offerings.
Winklevoss’s comparison places Zcash’s renewed enthusiasm within a familiar recovery narrative, while Gemini’s integrations demonstrate its longstanding involvement with the network.
