Crypto’s Leadership Is Shifting — Privacy Tokens Are Now in Front

Crypto’s leadership is shifting, and privacy tokens are leading the charge. Zcash traded at $845.54 on September 3, 2026, up 73.7% over 30 days.
Monero traded at $510.97, up 41.5% over the same stretch. Both figures come from CoinGecko’s price data as of 13:00 UTC.
Neither Bitcoin nor Ethereum posted anything close to that pace over the same month.
How ZEC Got Here
Zcash’s chart tells the story clearly. Price sat flat near $500 through most of early and mid-August. It broke sharply higher around August 21, climbing past $800 within days.

It briefly touched near $900 by late August before settling at $845.54. Zcash crossed $800 for the first time since 2018 during this run.
A newly listed Zcash ETF, trading under the ticker ZCSH, began trading on NYSE Arca on August 24, 2026, according to NYSE Arca’s own listing certification filed with the SEC.
Roughly 4.81 million ZEC, about 28.4% of total supply, now sits in shielded pools as of late August, a sign holders are actively using the token’s privacy features rather than just trading it speculatively.
Monero’s Steadier Climb
Monero’s path looked different. Price climbed gradually from around $350 in early August to $510 by September.
There was no single sharp breakout day like Zcash had. The moves felt more like sustained accumulation than a momentum spike.

Techgaged tracked a related privacy-coin surge back in August, when ZEC and HYPE both posted sharp single-session gains during a broader altcoin rally.
Why This Sector Keeps Outperforming
Privacy coins delivered roughly 288% returns as a sector in 2025. Exchange tokens managed just 22% over the same period.
That gap reflects a real shift in what investors are rewarding. Zcash isn’t without risk here.
A severe Orchard vulnerability in June triggered a 50% price drop within 24 hours. The token has more than recovered since, but that volatility is part of the trade.
What This Means for the Broader Market
Techgaged also flagged this kind of rotation earlier this year, when Bitcoin’s own recovery pulled Ethereum, Solana, and BNB higher alongside it.
It was a reminder that leadership within crypto rotates in cycles rather than staying fixed on any single asset. Privacy coins now sit at the front of that rotation.
Whether ZEC and XMR hold these gains or give them back in a sharp pullback, the way Zcash did in June, will likely depend on whether the shielded-pool and ETF demand driving this run keeps building or was mostly leverage chasing a fast move.
