Nvidia CEO Says AGI Exists But Not at Human Level Yet

Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang thinks AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence, might already be here. But he points out that this is not in the cinematic, human-like sense people usually picture, but in a more practical form that is starting to show up in real tools. His take has reignited the debate that AGI already exists. This is especially as others in the industry push back on what qualifies as real intelligence.

Huang Says AGI Is Here as OpenAI Still Chases Human-Level AI

Speaking on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Jensen Huang leaned into a different way of thinking about AGI. Instead of focusing on human-like reasoning, he tied it to output. If an AI system can create something like a billion-dollar company, he suggested that might already meet the bar.

He pointed to OpenClaw AI, a project that allows users to run autonomous agents locally. This is an early example of how AI systems can create and scale digital products. The idea aligns with how quickly generative AI is already being adopted. According to a 2024 report by McKinsey & Company, generative AI could add between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion annually to the global economy. This will be driven by automation and new digital services. AI systems are already writing code, managing workflows, and launching applications with minimal human input. He added,

“It’s not out of the question that an OpenClaw could create a web service or some interesting little app that, all of a sudden, a few billion people use for 50 cents.”

Huang, however, drew a clear limit. Short-term scale is not the same as sustained intelligence. While AI agents may create widely used apps, they cannot replicate complex companies. Nvidia, now valued at over $4 trillion, depends on long-term research, supply chains, and strategic decision-making that AI systems cannot amange end to end.

OpenAI Takes A More Cautious View on AGI Progress

This view contrasts with how Sam Altman describes OpenAI’s AGI progress. Altman has said AGI is “close” but has also noted that current models are still missing key capabilities. This includes continuous learning and reliable reasoning. He has also warned that the world may not be fully prepared for AGI once it arrives.

The gap between these views is becoming more visible. Huang is measuring what AI can produce today. Others are focused on what it still cannot do. For now, both can be true, depending on how AGI is defined. More recently, OpenAI finalized a $30 billion investment in OpenAI while the duo abandoned the previous $100 billion multi-year project.
