Capriole Investments founder Charles Edwards has warned that Bitcoin’s projected rise to $300,000 depends on resolving its quantum security risks. According to Edwards, quantum computing concerns may already reduce Bitcoin’s value by approximately 30% through an overlooked security discount.


Investment bank Bernstein projects Bitcoin could reach $150,000 by mid-2027 before climbing toward $300,000 by 2029. Its report links the anticipated growth to sovereign debt concerns and stronger institutional demand for alternative assets.


However, Edwards believes Bitcoin needs quantum-resistant cryptography before institutional investors can confidently support such an extended market expansion. Institutional funds provide an important source of capital within Bernstein’s model, making network security central to the forecast.


Consequently, uncertainty surrounding Bitcoin’s exposed addresses could limit the large inflows required for the projected rally. Analysts estimate that quantum computers could eventually threaten between 20% and 30% of Bitcoin’s existing supply.


These holdings include coins stored in older addresses whose public keys already appear openly across the Bitcoin blockchain. Satoshi Nakamoto’s wallets represent prominent examples because their enormous balances could significantly affect market confidence.


A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically use Shor’s algorithm to calculate private keys from exposed public information. Such machines cannot currently threaten Bitcoin, although developers must establish protections before quantum technology becomes capable enough. Moreover, institutional investors may demand a practical migration framework before committing larger amounts of capital for extended periods.

Bitcoin Developers Examine Quantum Defenses for Vulnerable Legacy Addresses

Bitcoin Core developers are examining BIP-360, which proposes post-quantum addresses based on the ML-DSA algorithm. The proposal would provide safer storage for coins protected by cryptography that future quantum computers could potentially compromise.


Meanwhile, BIP-361 offers a more aggressive approach for managing Bitcoin remaining inside vulnerable legacy addresses. Under that proposal, developers could freeze exposed legacy coins five years following the activation of quantum-resistant protections.


Supporters believe the measure could prevent attackers from stealing dormant Bitcoin and releasing large amounts into circulation. However, opponents may resist such action because freezing assets conflicts with Bitcoin’s principles of ownership and unrestricted access.


Galaxy Digital has allocated $5 million through its Bitcoin Quantum Readiness initiative to accelerate research and practical development. Ethereum developers have also reconsidered cryptographic security while preparing stronger protections for the network’s long-term technical roadmap.


The Ethereum Foundation replaced the vulnerable Poseidon2 function with established SHA-256 and BLAKE functions for its Layer 1 strategy. Its revised protection roadmap targets 2029, showing that quantum readiness has become important across major blockchain networks.


Bitcoin Must Break $70,920 Before Higher Price Targets Gain Support

Besides quantum concerns, Bitcoin faces significant market resistance before approaching Bernstein’s projected valuation targets. Glassnode’s MVRV pricing bands place the potential peak for Bitcoin’s current cycle between $134,000 and $180,000.


However, Bitcoin must overcome resistance near $70,920, where many existing holders established their positions. That concentrated cost basis could create substantial selling pressure whenever Bitcoin approaches the resistance level during another recovery.


Bernstein’s forecast therefore combines supportive macroeconomic conditions with sustained institutional demand extending across several years. Yet Edwards argues that investors may hesitate without credible protections for addresses exposed to future quantum attacks. Bitcoin’s path toward $300,000 depends on market demand, resistance levels, and developers establishing an acceptable quantum migration framework.
