The home invasion targeted the San Francisco residence of venture capitalist Lachy Groom, where $11 million of cryptocurrency was stolen during a 90-minute assault.

Targeted Home Invasion in Mission District

An armed intruder posing as a delivery worker stole approximately $11 million in cryptocurrency from the San Francisco residence of venture capitalist Lachy Groom, a tech investor previously in a relationship with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The incident occurred last Saturday evening at Groom’s Dorland Street property in the city’s Mission District, according to police sources cited in a New York Post report.

Doorbell camera footage shared on social media shows the suspect approaching the $4.4 million property while carrying a white package. He identified himself as working with a UPS affiliate and claimed to be delivering a parcel for someone named “Joshua.”

Deception at the Doorstep

The house, purchased by Groom in 2021 for $1.8 million from Altman’s brother, is shared with another tech investor named Joshua. The footage captures the suspect asking for “Joshua” and stating he had a package requiring a signature. When the resident confirmed his identity as Joshua, the man requested a pen. As the resident reached for it, the intruder entered the home behind him. A loud bang is heard moments later.

Once inside, the suspect allegedly produced a firearm, restrained the resident with duct tape, and began a 90-minute assault that police believe was part of a coordinated effort by an organized crime group.

Assault and Cryptocurrency Theft

Investigators say the suspect tied up the victim before gaining access to his crypto wallets. Over the course of the ordeal, he allegedly beat the resident while “foreign voices recited information” over a phone on loudspeaker. The intruder also poured an unidentified liquid on the victim before withdrawing Ethereum and Bitcoin valued at roughly $11 million.

The assailant reportedly left the residence with the victim’s phone and laptop after transferring the funds. Police officers arrived at approximately 6:45 p.m. and found the victim with minor injuries, including bruising.

Groom, 31, is a venture capitalist whose past relationship with Altman, 40, has not been publicly detailed before this incident. Sources familiar with their history said the two dated prior to Altman’s marriage in 2024. Groom’s ties to the AI executive surfaced after reports identified him as the homeowner targeted in the high-value heist.

Attempts to contact Groom for comment were unsuccessful. Investigators continue to search for the suspect as the case is being treated as a calculated crypto-focused robbery carried out under the guise of a routine delivery.
