Solana News: SGP-0002 Passes, Doubles SOL Issuance Cuts
Solana's first-ever on-chain governance vote closed with a razor-thin result. SGP-0002, the proposal to double the network's disinflation rate, passed with 67% support against a required 66.67% threshold, while a companion fee-burn measure fell short.
This is the biggest Solana News story of the week, and it touches everything from SOL issuance to network speed upgrades.
The voting window ran from August 22 to August 27, 2026, with the final tally confirmed on-chain through the network's new governance system, governance.solana.com.
Solana Disinflation Vote: What Actually Passed
The core proposal, filed as SGP-0002 and tracked under SIMD-550, doubles the annual disinflation rate from 15% to 30%.
This is a SOL inflation cut, not an instant supply shock it accelerates how fast new token creation slows down each year.
Metric | Result |
Support | 67.0% (176.29M SOL) |
Against | 66.19M SOL |
Quorum | 60.7% participation |
Fewer SOL minted (6 years) | ~18.9 million SOL |
New terminal-rate target | 2029 (moved up from 2032) |
This Solana governance vote result means issuance reduced meaningfully over the coming years, though the change still needs technical activation through a future Solana Improvement Document before it goes live on mainnet.
TheBlockCo also covered this in a tweet confirming that SGP-0002 passed while the fee-burn measure failed to clear its threshold.
Kraken Solana Vote Tipped the Outcome
The margin came down to a single validator. Exchange operator Kraken initially voted against the measure, which briefly pushed support below the required threshold.
In the final hour, Kraken reversed course more than 90% of its roughly 8.9 million staked SOL flipped to "yes." Without that switch, the proposal would have failed near 63.9%.
A related measure, SGP-0003, aimed at boosting fee burns, is a clear case of the Solana fee burn proposal fail it landed near 54% support, well below the two-thirds bar needed to pass.
CoinDesk also covered this news in a tweet detailing the final-hour swing that pushed the vote past its 66.67% requirement.

Solana Network Upgrade 2026: Slot Times Also Dropped
Separately, the blockchain is mid-way through a staged speed upgrade under SIMD-0525. Block production time has now fallen to 300 milliseconds for the first time, down from 400ms just eight days earlier:
400ms → 350ms (August 21)
350ms → 300ms (latest activation)
Two more staged cuts remain, targeting 200ms
Each step requires fresh validator approval before the next reduction proceeds.
SolanaFloor also covered this news in a tweet flagging the 300ms milestone as the second reduction under the upgrade path.
SOL Price News Today: Market Reaction
Following the vote, on-chain trackers flagged a whale buy worth roughly $29.58 million on Binance, suggesting large holders are positioning around the tighter supply outlook.
According to the latest CoinGecko data, it is trading at $103.42, experiencing a 3.4% decrease over the last 24 hours.
Metric | Value |
Current Price | $103.42 |
24h Change | -3.4% |
Market Cap | $60.627B |
24h Trading Volume | $5.327B |
Circulating Supply | 584.162M SOL |
Total Supply | 633.079M SOL |

Analysts note this could support SOL's price narrative, though market conditions may shift as the disinflation change moves toward implementation.
TedPillows also covered this news in a tweet pointing to the large SOL purchase shortly after the vote outcome.
Crypto news today has been dominated by this story across the ecosystem, and it marks one of the more consequential updates in recent crypto news for Solana's tokenomics roadmap.
