Working as a prequel to the superb action movie Mad Max: Fury Road from 2015, Furiosa will hit cinemas on May 23. Yet, well before its release, Furiosa has a big impact on the Mad Max setting. The film from George Miller, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, has reportedly worked to make a much-loved video game canon.

Back in 2015, Avalanche Studios sent out its open-world, post-apocalyptic game Mad Max. It beat two other Mad Max games to release and was praised for just about everything. At the time, Mad Max was inspired by Miller’s setting, but now, fans can go back to the game and consider it a part of the story.

Furiosa giving the game its seal of approval

Being headed up by George Miller, whatever he green lights obviously goes in the Furiosa movie. It happens that the creator has allowed for specific references to the video game from 2015. The reports come via ComicBook, which cites Drew McWeeny’s Twitter post.

The critic claims to have read the script and seen some storyboards for the upcoming movie. Given what’s shown in Furiosa’s trailers, imagining it integrating the setting, events, or characters of the video game isn’t a stretch. Plus, the video game was very faithful to Miller’s setting and captured the essence of surviving amidst raiders on the dusty plains.

Mad Max is officially a cult classic in gaming circles now, standing as just one of two video games to be created in the Mad Max universe. The last was released in 1990 for the NES, being based on Mad Max 2. Still, Mad Max is going strong in another arena of gaming. Among the top-rated Ontario online casinos sits one with a near-impeccable score of 4.91 out of 5.00.

888casino offers over 1,500 games for Ontarian players. Three of its most eye-catching slots are official Mad Max games. Mad Max: Fury Road, the expanded payline version Mad Max: Fury Road Megaways, and the instant-win Mad Max: Fury Road Scratch games have all generated hefty followings of their own at the online casino.

Could this inspire another Mad Max game?

Mad Max: Fury Road was praised upon release and has earned a strong following, but its box-office run was a bit underwhelming. Furiosa will hopefully encourage more fans to get to the cinema and experience what’s bound to be another high-octane thrill ride in the best possible way. If it does, perhaps it’ll be enough to validate another video game outing.

Mad Max from 2015 holds a very positive review score on Steam from over 45,000 reviews, and apparently, it was close to just being the first installment. A PC Gamer report points to someone posting about getting 3D-scanned for Mad Max 2 at Avalanche. The developers, however, have long moved on from Mad Max. Instead of Mad Max 2, they made Just Cause 3, Just Cause 4, and Rage 2.

If the reports hold true, a superb video game has been made canon in the Mad Max universe by Furiosa, but hopefully, the new movie does enough to warrant another game.
