Cardano Is Still 94% Below Its Peak — What Went Wrong With ADA?

Cardano once ranked as the third-largest cryptocurrency in the world. Today, it trades for less than 18 cents, a level that puts it roughly 94% below the all-time high it hit back in September 2021. That gap alone tells a story worth unpacking.

The Long Road Down From $3.10

ADA touched $3.10 in September 2021 during the last major bull run, back when the token briefly ranked behind only Bitcoin and Ethereum by market value.

The climb down since then hasn’t been a single crash. It’s been a grinding, multi-year slide interrupted by short-lived rallies that never held.

Forbes noted the token fell to a six-year low back in June, a drop that coincided with the cancellation of Cardano’s flagship summit after a failed community vote.

That event alone wiped out confidence at a moment the token could least afford it.

Fundamentals That Haven’t Translated Into Price

Techgaged has tracked Cardano’s on-chain health closely through this stretch, and the numbers rarely look as weak as the price suggests.

Total staked ADA has exceeded 23.4 billion tokens, roughly 65% of circulating supply, spread across more than 3,200 active stake pools

Governance participation through the Voltaire era has also stayed active, with thousands of DReps voting on treasury proposals.

Yet none of that has been enough to pull the price out of its downtrend, a disconnect Techgaged flagged again when Cardano’s core development team scaled back its funding request from $97.5 million to $46.8 million, a sign the ecosystem is tightening its belt rather than expanding aggressively.

What The Long-Term Chart Is Actually Mapping Out

The weekly Elliott Wave count on ADA/USD shows a completed five-wave decline from the 2021 peak, followed by a corrective bounce toward $0.90 and a fresh leg lower that’s still unfolding.

Fibonacci retracement levels place potential downside targets between $0.092 and $0.163 if the current wave structure plays out, with $0.049 marking a deeper long-term floor tied to prior cycle lows.

That lines up with support zones flagged separately: $0.115 as a historical demand area, and $0.053 as the level tied to the depths of past bear markets.

Where ADA Sits As Of Today

As of the latest CoinGecko reading on August 16, 2026 (10:00 UTC), ADA trades at $0.176916, down 9.7% over the past seven days.

Price has slid steadily from just under $0.20 on August 10, breaking below its own 200-day moving average along the way, a signal the longer trend remains firmly down.

The daily chart shows both the 50-day and 200-day moving averages falling, offering little near-term support for bulls to lean on.

Whether Cardano’s strong staking base and active governance eventually pull the price off these lows, or whether the wave count above plays out toward $0.10, is the question every ADA holder is now sitting with?
