What to Know
- A Bitcoin wallet transferred 20.43 BTC worth approximately $1.7 million following 15 years of inactivity, with both parties remaining unidentified.
- Galaxy Research tracked four wallets dormant for at least a decade moving 1,971.03 BTC, alongside other transfers involving early holdings.
- Bitcoin gained roughly 9% during September following August’s 25% advance, while renewed ETF demand accompanied its price recovery above $87,000.
Two Bitcoin transactions ended a wallet’s 15-year silence, moving holdings worth approximately $1.7 million that had remained untouched since 2011. According to Galaxy Research, the address transferred 20.43 BTC on September 29, ending an inactivity period dating back to May 2011.
Those transactions involved separate batches of 10.33 BTC and 10.10 BTC, carrying estimated historical bases near $4 and $3 per coin. Galaxy calculated approximately $872,000 in appreciation for the larger batch, representing a reported gain of roughly 2,192,671% against its historical basis.
Meanwhile, the second batch contributed to a combined estimated gain of approximately $1.724 million across both groups of old outputs. However, these calculations measure appreciation against estimated historical values, while the transactions themselves do not establish that the owner sold.
Galaxy Research identified neither the sender nor the recipient, leaving the ownership and purpose of both transfers unresolved. Consequently, the available findings document the movement of longstanding holdings without confirming an exchange deposit or a change in ownership.

September Transfers Include Bitcoin Mined More Than 16 Years Ago
Other dormant wallet movements during September involved considerably larger holdings, including coins originating from Bitcoin’s early mining years. On September 5, twelve wallets containing 50 BTC each transferred a combined 600 BTC following more than 16 years of inactivity.
Those coins originated from mining rewards generated in March 2010 and carried an estimated value of approximately $48 million. Blockchain investigators traced the outputs into newer, unidentified addresses but found no evidence establishing ownership by Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto.
Additionally, Galaxy tracked four wallets inactive for at least a decade that moved 1,971.03 BTC between September 6 and September 22. Another wallet holding 10.25 BTC also ended an inactivity period dating back to March 2011, adding to the reported movements.
Separately, a 2011 wallet transferred 100 BTC worth approximately $8.09 million on September 19, marking another movement of early holdings. Three days later, an address dormant since July 2012 moved 600 BTC, carrying an estimated value of approximately $51.9 million. Together, these cases place the September 29 transactions within a broader series of transfers involving Bitcoin untouched for many years.
Bitcoin’s September Recovery Brings October Performance Into View
Alongside those wallet movements, Bitcoin recorded substantial market gains during August and September, with renewed ETF demand accompanying its recovery. According to TradingView data, BTC gained roughly 9% during September, building on an advance of approximately 25% in August.
Bitcoin also climbed above $87,000 for the first time in eight months, supported by short covering and stronger liquidity. Moreover, its recovery brought renewed attention to October’s historical performance, which traders commonly reference through the seasonal term “Uptober.”
Between 2013 and 2025, Bitcoin finished October higher in ten of thirteen years, recording an average monthly return near 19%. However, that historical record does not guarantee another positive month or explain the decisions behind the dormant wallet transfers. Galaxy’s findings establish that 20.43 BTC moved following prolonged inactivity, while the owner’s identity and reasons for transferring remain unknown.
