Key Insights:
- Ethereum Foundation departures continues as senior researchers to exite in May.
- Julian Ma and Carl Beek worked to build Ethereum scaling and proof-of-stake systems.
- Ethereum Foundation reformation continues despite governance and leadership debates.
The Ethereum Foundation is in focus with the recent trending Ethereum news. This follows another period of high-profile resignations, as two senior researchers announced their exits this week.
Julian Ma and Carl Beek announced they are leaving the organization after contributing to several major Ethereum initiatives.
Their departures increased the number of resignations tied to the Ethereum Foundation in recent months. The latest exits come during a transition period for the Ethereum Foundation.
The organization recently introduced a new mandate that clarified its role within the Ethereum network. The document stated that the foundation does not consider itself Ethereum’s central authority.
Instead, it described the group as one of several long-term stewards supporting research, public goods, privacy, and network security.
At the same time, leadership changes and developer departures have led to discussion across the Ethereum community. Several researchers, executives, and protocol contributors have either resigned, stepped back, or taken temporary breaks during 2026.
Ethereum News: Ethereum Foundation Faces New Research Exits
Carl Beek confirmed on Monday that he will leave the Ethereum Foundation after seven years. He contributed to the early design of Ethereum’s Beacon Chain, which later supported the blockchain’s transition to proof-of-stake consensus.
In a public statement on X, Beek thanked Ethereum researchers, developers, and community members for their collaboration. He also noted that he and his wife welcomed a one-year-old child last month. According to his statement, his final day at the Ethereum Foundation will be May 29.
Julian Ma also announced his departure this week after nearly four years at the organization. Ma worked on Ethereum’s cryptoeconomics, protocol scaling, and mechanism design initiatives during his tenure.

Ma stated that he plans to focus on product and growth-related work moving forward. He described the Ethereum Foundation as an amazing place but said it no longer aligned with his next professional steps.
During his time at the Ethereum Foundation, Ma contributed to FOCIL, also known as EIP-7805, which aimed to strengthen Ethereum’s censorship resistance.
He also helped lead the rollout of the Fast Confirmation Rule, which reduced bridging times between Ethereum Layer 2 networks and the Ethereum mainnet to 13 seconds.
Ethereum Foundation Restructuring Continues
The recent exits, along with the Ethereum news, follow several other leadership and developer changes linked to the Ethereum Foundation. Tomasz K. Stańczak stepped down earlier this year after serving as co-executive director. Josh Stark also resigned in March after seven years with the organization.
Barnabé Monnot, Tim Beiko, and Trent Van Epps also departed from various Ethereum Foundation initiatives this year. Meanwhile, Alex Stokes announced a sabbatical earlier this month.
The Ethereum Foundation introduced its updated mandate during growing debate around governance, transparency, and institutional influence within Ethereum. The organization stated that it intends to reduce its own central position as the network continues to grow and develop.
The ongoing leadership changes have sparked discussion across the Ethereum community about the Ethereum Foundation’s long-term structure and operational direction.
