Ethereum Was At Peak Fear Just Before The Market Turned

Ethereum just jumped 28.2% in seven days. Days before the move, the crowd was more pessimistic about ETH than it had been in three months.
Santiment’s data shows that timing wasn’t a coincidence worth ignoring.

What Santiment Actually Tracked
Santiment recorded ETH’s weighted social sentiment hitting a three-month low on August 17, 2026. Two days later, ETH rose about 17%.
This wasn’t a one-off pattern either. A similar sentiment trough hit on June 27, followed by a 14% gain. Another trough on July 11 preceded a 7% rebound, according to Santiment’s own published insight.
Three sentiment lows this year, three rebounds that followed. Santiment itself stopped short of calling it a guarantee, noting the setup becomes useful only when ETF flows, L2 activity, and protocol upgrades remain active underneath the pessimism.
A Divergence That Has Been Building For Months
This isn’t the first time whale behavior and retail fear pulled in opposite directions on Ethereum. Techgaged reported in January that large ETH buyers kept accumulating through a market dump even as retail sentiment stayed cautious, calling the divergence between whale conviction and crowd fear a pattern worth tracking rather than a one-time event.
A separate report in December noted Ethereum’s validator entry queue meaningfully exceeded its exit queue for the first time in months, a signal that committed capital was choosing to lock up ETH rather than exit, even during a stretch of muted price action.
Where The Chart Sits
ETH trades at $2,403.76, up 28.2% over the past seven days as of the latest CoinGecko reading on August 21, 2026 (10:00 UTC).

Price held flat between roughly $1,850 and $1,950 for most of mid-August before breaking sharply higher on August 19, the same window Santiment’s sentiment data flagged as the recent low point.
Watch whether ETF inflows stay positive through the coming week. A break back into outflows would test whether this rebound has the institutional backing the prior two rallies had.
