Fantom, a blockchain startup, announced today the details of its Smart Medicine pilot project to combat counterfeit drugs. The announcement comes after Fantom partnered with Afgan Ministry of Public Health and many leading pharmaceutical distributors.

During a partnership signing ceremony last month, Ahmad Jawid Sikandar, a Fantom representative met with counterparts from pharmaceutical producers and distributors. Some of them include, Nabros Pharma, India’s finest producer of phospholipids and Royal Star, Afghanistan’s leading pharmaceutical company.

The partnership aims to solve Afghanistan’s prominent counterfeit pharmaceuticals problem, caused by improper checks in the supply chain process. Till now, it is common to see counterfeit drugs mixed with genuine ones during the distribution process, which poses a great risk to public health. In 2017, 100 tons of fake, expired and substandard medicines were seized throughout the country.

By facilitating blockchain certification of pharmaceuticals in the country, Fantom together with its partners will provide an unchangeable audit trail to ensure items are not tampered with at the distribution phase. The Fantom blockchain will track 80,000 products across 4 different pharmaceuticals, providing fast and secure agreement.

Micheal Kong, Fantom CIO, stated that they are excited to be advancing the project to the next stage. He added that they will ensure the authenticity of pharmaceuticals and make an important contribution to the country’s healthcare system, with the help of Royal Star, Nabros Pharma and Bliss GVS.

Fantom has developed shipping labels which will be scanned at each stage of the distribution process with a hash of the data. The data includes, name of product, expiry date, batch number and others which will be generated, timestamped and committed on-chain. Every labelled item will contain an exclusive hash generated by 11 separate data points. The validity of the data can be verified on the public blockchain.

Fantom’s arrangement with the Ministry of Public Health will not only address the issue of fake drugs, but also develop blockchain-based hospital medical records and electronic patient healthcare records.
