Ripple CTO Says XRPL is First Blockchain To Not Use PoW

• David Schwartz revealed that the XRPL was the first blockchain to not use PoW.
• He added that the Ripple founder hired him to replace the PoW consensus model.
• XRPL uses a consensus algorithm created by Schwartz, Arthur Britto & Noah Youngs.

In a revelation on Twitter, Ripple’s CTO and one of the original XRPL designers, David Schwartz shared that the XRP Ledger (XRPL) was the first blockchain to not use proof-of-work (PoW).

Schwartz further added that Ripple founder Jed McCaleb hired him to provide a solution to replace the PoW consensus model. He tweeted out the claim in response to an inquiry made by Stefan Huber.

It is worth noting that one of the oldest blockchain networks, XRPL is unique too because it does not use PoW or proof-of-stake (PoS), instead it uses a proprietary consensus algorithm designed by Schwartz, Arthur Britto and Noah Youngs.

Impressively, the protocol has the potential to reach a consensus without the complete agreement on which nodes create the network.

These conversations were ignited after a patent document discovered that Schwartz might have been the brains behind the XRPL concept in 1988. Not to forget that Ripple is currently caught up in a long-standing legal battle with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), as SEC claims XRP is an unregistered security.

Infact, pertaining to the ‘importance’ of this case, Ripple’s general counsel, Stuart Alderoty, commented that XRP’s defense against the SEC might be the best chance for crypto to gain legal clarity. Alderoty also said that SEC has overstepped its boundaries, and its chairman, Gary Gensler, has taken up a strong regulatory posture instead of working with other regulators.
