What to Know

  • Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposes separating transaction actions from dependencies to improve validation, execution, network efficiency, and scalability across Ethereum.
  • Pure dependencies can be checked independently, while recursive STARK proofs could combine numerous completed validations into one verifiable cryptographic proof.
  • EIP-8141, keyed nonces, and alternative state designs support account abstraction, flexible authorization, improved transaction ordering, and fewer unnecessary delays.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed a transaction model that could transform how the network handles validation and execution. According to Buterin, research has clarified the distinction between actions and dependencies that must be resolved before execution. The model draws from EIP-8141, keyed nonces, alternative state designs, and recursive STARK-based mempools.

Ethereum Transaction Separation Could Enable Parallel Verification

Actions represent the effects transactions create, including token transfers, account updates, and smart contract interactions. Dependencies represent conditions Ethereum must verify before permitting those actions. Separating both components could unlock different optimization methods.

Ethereum currently connects validation with execution. Nodes receive transactions, verify their requirements, and then perform the requested operations. However, Buterin believes developers can process many dependencies independently because they possess different properties from actions.

Some dependencies require network information, while others operate without accessing Ethereum’s state. These requirements, described as pure dependencies, could undergo verification before transactions enter a block.

Consequently, mempools could examine them and prevent validators from repeating checks during block execution. Nodes could process multiple dependencies simultaneously rather than verifying each requirement in a single sequence.

Moreover, recursive STARK technology could combine many completed checks into one cryptographic proof. Such aggregation could reduce computation across validators while preserving transaction integrity.

Account Abstraction Supports the Proposed Transaction Model

The proposal connects with Ethereum’s account abstraction efforts, which aim to provide more programmable transaction options. EIP-8141 explores formats supporting flexible authorization and execution. Keyed nonces could also improve transaction ordering for individual accounts.

Traditional nonces place transactions from one account into a strict sequence. One delayed transaction can therefore block later operations. Keyed nonces establish separate sequences within the same account, allowing unrelated operations to proceed without unnecessary delays.

Alternative state designs could change how Ethereum stores transaction information and identifies necessary validation conditions. Together, these research areas present a modular structure for handling transaction intent, authorization, verification, and execution.

Nevertheless, the model remains a developing concept rather than a confirmed Ethereum upgrade. Developers must assess its security and implementation requirements. Ultimately, this distinction could support parallel validation, reduce duplicated work, and improve Ethereum’s handling of increasingly complex transactions.
