Galaxy has launched a $5 million initiative called the Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, aimed at helping developers prepare for potential future threats posed by quantum computing. The program combines funding, research, and expert guidance to encourage the development of practical solutions that can be tested and refined over time.

Although no existing quantum computer can currently break Bitcoin’s cryptography, Galaxy believes that it is essential for the network to start preparing before these risks become a reality.

Galaxy Seeks Early Action on Bitcoin Security

The Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative reflects a growing understanding that preparation is more effective than reaction when addressing emerging technologies. Galaxy asserts that while Bitcoin’s decentralized nature is central to its success, it also means that significant upgrades can take years to develop, review, and implement.

Therefore, waiting until quantum computing poses an immediate threat could leave the network with too little time to respond effectively. To support long-term planning, Galaxy has committed up to $5 million in grants for developers and researchers focused on quantum-resistant technologies.

The funding will support projects concentrating on post-quantum signature schemes, wallet migration tools, security audits, and upgrade proposals aimed at strengthening Bitcoin’s cryptographic foundations.

The initiative goes beyond financial support. To guide the effort, Galaxy has also established a Quantum Advisory Council composed of leading experts in cryptography, computer science, and related fields. This council will assist in evaluating grant applications, providing technical guidance, and identifying promising areas for future development.

Industry Efforts Expand as Quantum Research Advances

Galaxy’s initiative comes at a time when awareness of quantum computing is growing across technology and financial industries. This trend has prompted governments, research institutions, and private companies to start developing quantum-resistant technologies.

In the crypto sector, companies like the Solana Foundation have made significant strides toward quantum readiness. The layer-1 network recently disclosed a new implementation strategy that utilizes post-quantum digital signature schemes designed to resist attacks from future quantum computers that could break current elliptic-curve cryptography.

Additionally, the Ethereum ecosystem has formed a dedicated post-quantum (PQ) team led by Thomas Coratger. The team comprises leading cryptography experts working on leanVM, a system crucial to Ethereum’s future quantum-resistant design.

While the quantum threat is still theoretical at this stage, industry participants increasingly view early preparation as a responsible approach. Galaxy’s $5 million commitment adds momentum to this initiative, reinforcing the notion that protecting Bitcoin’s future requires planning well in advance of potential challenges.
