President Yoon Suk Yeol delivered a robust message at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition (ADEX) 2023, reaffirming South Korea’s commitment to enhancing the competitiveness of its defense industry. The event, held at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, marks the largest-ever edition of ADEX, bringing together 550 companies from 35 countries and over 30,000 visitors, including military officials from 55 nations.

Redefining South Korea’s defense industry

President Yoon’s address underscored South Korea’s remarkable transformation from a nation that once relied heavily on assistance and imports to a self-reliant producer of advanced fighter jets. In his words, the nation’s defense industry is “writing new history.”

Last year, South Korea set a record in arms exports, amounting to 22.9 trillion won (US$17.9 billion), further solidifying its status as a key player in the global arms trade. The country inked significant contracts with Poland to supply K2 tanks, K-9 self-propelled howitzers, FA-50 light attack aircraft, and Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers.

“The defense industry isn’t just about national security; it’s also a cornerstone of our economy,” President Yoon emphasized, highlighting the government’s commitment to fostering an ecosystem that enhances global competitiveness in this sector.

ADEX 2023 serves as a platform to demonstrate the unwavering strength of the South Korea-U.S. alliance, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. The event features an impressive array of military aircraft, including South Korea’s homegrown KF-21 fighter jet conducting a public debut demonstration flight, alongside U.S. counterparts such as the F-22 stealth jet, F-16 fighter jet, T-50 trainer jet, and U-2 spy plane.

A strategic objective: Boosting arms exports

Boosting the competitiveness of arms exports has been a central goal of President Yoon’s administration. Earlier this year, the government established a public-private consultative body involving key stakeholders from the National Security Office, defense, foreign affairs, industry ministries, and defense companies. Their mission is to strategize and implement measures to bolster arms exports, strengthening South Korea’s presence in the global defense market.

Aerospace and AI: The future of defense

President Yoon also stressed the significance of aerospace technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of warfare. He announced the government’s active support for the aerospace industry, aiming to propel South Korea into the ranks of the world’s top five space technology nations.

In a significant move, President Yoon unveiled preparations for the launch of a state aerospace agency, a key campaign promise. This agency will serve as the core of collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors to advance the aerospace industry.

Conclusion

President Yoon Suk Yeol’s address at ADEX 2023 reflects South Korea’s commitment to enhancing its defense industry’s competitiveness on the global stage. The nation’s journey from dependence on imports to record-breaking arms exports showcases its evolving role in the international defense market. The event highlights the robust South Korea-U.S. alliance and underscores the importance of aerospace technology and AI in shaping the future of defense. With the launch of a state aerospace agency on the horizon, South Korea aims to solidify its position as a key player in the aerospace and defense realm.

As South Korea continues to innovate and strengthen its defense industry, ADEX 2023 serves as a testament to the nation’s determination to excel on the global stage and contribute to international peace and security.
