Bitcoin Reclaims $64,000 as Risk-Off Pressure Eases

Bitcoin traded near $64,150 on July 11, up roughly 1.3-1.4% over 24 hours and back above the psychological $64,000 level it lost during Thursday’s Iran-driven selloff. The Fear & Greed Index has climbed in steps through the week — 22 on Tuesday, 23 on Thursday, 26 today — reflecting sentiment that’s healing gradually rather than snapping back to greed. Total crypto market cap rose to roughly $2.28 trillion, up about 1.2% over 24 hours, with Ethereum outperforming Bitcoin on a 24-hour basis. For live price levels and technical analysis, see Bitcoin News Today and Ethereum News Today.

Suspected Hedera Exploit Sends $5.8 Million to Ethereum

Blockchain analysts PeckShield and Specter flagged a suspected exploit on the Hedera network that saw over $5.8 million in assets bridged from Hedera to Ethereum via LayerZero, with the attacker’s wallet swapping the funds from Wrapped Bitcoin into ETH after crossing chains. The wallet was reportedly funded initially with 1 ETH from Tornado Cash. Neither analyst has identified the party responsible, and no official loss estimate has been released. HBAR slipped following the reports. Separately, Ctrl Wallet announced it will shut down permanently after a security exploit affecting some Cardano wallets, giving users until August 3 to withdraw assets.

CLARITY Act: New Draft Could Emerge This Week

Lawmakers may release a new combined version of the CLARITY Act as soon as this week, merging language from the Senate Banking and Agriculture Committees, according to CoinDesk reporting. The bill has sat on the Senate Legislative Calendar since June without a floor vote, and three disputes still block the 60 votes needed to clear a filibuster: an ethics provision covering government officials’ crypto holdings, developer-protection language under Section 604, and how stablecoin yield is treated. The Senate returns from recess July 13 with roughly three working weeks left before the August recess — the window analysts have consistently flagged as the last realistic gate for 2026 passage.

Coinbase Premium’s Negative Streak Continues to Stretch

The Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Index — the price gap between Bitcoin on Coinbase versus Binance, tracked via CoinGlass — had reached a record 50 consecutive negative days as of July 7, the longest streak since the index began tracking. A negative reading means Bitcoin has traded consistently cheaper on the US-based exchange than globally, a signal traders read as persistently weak American demand even as prices have partially recovered. Absent a reversal, the streak is now well past 50 days.

Wallet Vulnerability Losses Cross $5 Million

Security firm Coinspect confirmed that its previously disclosed “Ill Bloom” wallet flaw — a weakness in how some older mobile and browser-extension wallets generated recovery phrases — has now been linked to more than $5 million in stolen funds, up from the roughly $3.1 million confirmed when the flaw was first disclosed. The firm says the exposed set of vulnerable wallets keeps growing as it finds more affected seed-generation paths, and stresses it will never ask users for seed phrases or private keys to “check” exposure.

What to Watch This Week

  • Senate returns from recess July 13 — roughly three working weeks remain to resolve the CLARITY Act’s ethics, Section 604, and stablecoin-yield disputes before the August recess deadline
  • GENIUS Act rulemaking deadline, July 18 — falls the same week the Senate resumes floor work on the broader crypto bill
  • New CLARITY Act draft possibly this week — combining Senate Banking and Agriculture Committee language, per CoinDesk sources
  • Hedera exploit fallout — watch for an official loss estimate and any response from the Hedera Foundation
  • Whether Coinbase Premium’s negative streak breaks — a reversal would be an early signal of returning US demand

Most of the assets above are accessible through major centralized exchanges (Binance, Coinbase, Kraken), with Bitcoin and Ethereum also accessible through regulated spot ETFs. Given this week’s security headlines, using exchanges with strong security track records and enabling hardware-wallet self-custody for long-term holdings is worth extra consideration.
