US Presidential Debate

YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — President Joe Biden’s first debate against Donald Trump on June 27, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia, raised voter concerns about his candidacy. Photographer Eva Marie Uzcategui captured the event. At 81, Biden’s performance highlighted concerns about his ability to serve another term.

Democrats reacted with alarm. A Democratic lawmaker, speaking anonymously, described Biden as a shell of his former self. Former communications director Kate Bedingfield stated on CNN,

“It was a really disappointing debate performance from Joe Biden.”

Biden’s U.S. Presidential Debate Missteps and Missed Opportunities

Throughout the debate, Biden frequently misspoke and provided incorrect facts. His answers were often interrupted by coughing fits, and he struggled to counter Trump’s attacks. At one point, he froze during a rambling answer, missing the chance to capitalize on his opponent’s mistakes.

Biden’s attempt to shift the conversation to his strengths faltered. He understated his job record and got dragged into discussions on immigration and golf handicaps instead of focusing on key issues like abortion. His claims about Medicare also drew scrutiny.

Trump Puts Biden on Defensive, Gains Momentum in Debate

Trump, who has been vocal about his support for cryptocurrency, managed to put Biden on the defensive. He focused on issues like the US’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, the border crisis, and inflation. Trump’s attacks on Biden’s handling of these issues resonated with many viewers.

A focus group of undecided voters hosted by Republican pollster Frank Luntz revealed that 12 out of 14 participants were more likely to vote for Trump after watching the debate. Karen Kierpaul of Michigan noted,

“It was very painful to watch Biden tonight.”

Trump avoided the aggressive outbursts seen in previous debates. Instead, he pressed Biden on contentious issues and highlighted the president’s stumbles, maintaining a controlled demeanor throughout the evening.

Biden Scores Points, But Struggles with U.S. Presidential Debate Performance

Biden did manage to land some punches, particularly when discussing Trump’s criminal record and threats to democracy. He called Trump a convicted felon and accused him of having “the morals of an alley cat.” These statements were strong but did little to overshadow Biden’s overall shaky delivery.

Democratic strategist Jon Reinish criticized Biden’s preparation, noting,

“The Biden team has never heard of espresso, or tea with honey and lemon.”

This comment reflected a broader concern about Biden’s physical preparedness for the debate.

Democrats Rally Behind Biden Despite Debate Woes

Prominent Democrats like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and California Governor Gavin Newsom defended Biden’s performance. Newsom stated,

“Absolutely, he’s our nominee. Nothing changed tonight.”

Vice President Kamala Harris acknowledged a slow start but praised Biden’s finish. Biden gained traction about 50 minutes into the debate, addressing Trump’s past statements on retribution and tax cuts. He also attacked Republicans’ stance on Social Security and Medicare.

Voter Reactions and Future Implications

Public opinion reflected significant concern about Biden’s age and capability. A recent Gallup poll indicated that more than three-quarters of US adults were worried about Biden’s age. The debate did little to alleviate these concerns.

Biden left the debate to visit a nearby Waffle House, where he told reporters he had a sore throat and found it challenging to debate Trump.

Crypto’s non-mention in the debate was notable despite the significant contributions from the crypto industry, with three crypto-backed super PACs raising $202.8 million and spending $93.6 million to influence the 2024 elections.

According to OpenSecrets, Fairshake PAC raised $177.8 million and spent $70.8 million in the 2024 election cycle. The majority of these funds have been used to bankroll attack ads targeting congressional candidates.

Two other related super PACs, Protect Progress and Defend American Jobs, have collectively spent $22.8 million in this year’s elections after raising $25 million.

Collectively, the three super PACs have raised the third-highest amount of money among all PACs. They can receive unlimited donations but are prohibited from coordinating directly with campaigns.

Gallup polls from last month reveal that cryptocurrency is not a primary concern for American voters. Instead, most prioritize the economy, inflation, poor governance, and immigration as the key issues facing the country.
