What to Know
- An early Ethereum investor moved 1,000 ETH to Kraken from a position acquired in 2017 for approximately $56,500.
- Ethereum’s quarter-to-date gain reached 72.7% despite losses in both preceding quarters, giving longstanding holders an opportunity to reduce their positions.
- Lookonchain’s $8.8 million estimated gain includes the remaining 1,000 ETH, whose value may change before the investor sells those coins.
An early Ethereum investor moved 1,000 ETH worth approximately $2.68 million to Kraken, reducing a position acquired for just $56,500. According to blockchain tracker Lookonchain, the investor bought 3,000 ETH in 2017 at an average price of $18.80 per coin, withdrew the coins from Gemini, and held them for years before moving portions of the position.
Early Ethereum Holder Takes Profits During Third-Quarter Rally
Lookonchain reported that the holder sold 2,000 ETH for $6.19 million at an average price of $3,096, counting the latest 1,000 ETH movement as a sale, although a Kraken deposit alone cannot confirm execution.* The reported sale proceeds exceed the original investment by more than $6 million, while Lookonchain valued the wallet’s remaining 1,000 ETH at approximately $2.67 million.

These figures show that the investor reduced exposure while retaining a substantial Ethereum position, separating reported sale proceeds from the changing value of coins still held. The activity coincides with a strong third quarter for Ethereum following first-half losses, with CryptoRank figures cited in the source report placing ETH’s quarter-to-date gain at 72.7%.
Ethereum lost 29.1% in the first quarter and 25.3% in the second, so the rebound has increased the value of coins purchased years before those market swings. The third quarter remains unfinished and its final return could change, although the rally provides context for the investor’s latest transfer to Kraken.
Reported $8.8 Million Gain Includes Coins Still Held
Lookonchain estimated the position’s total gain at roughly $8.8 million, or about 156 times the original investment. Its calculation includes the estimated value of the remaining 1,000 ETH, which has not been sold.
The distinction matters because the value of those coins can change before the holder converts them into cash. Likewise, a transfer to Kraken can precede a sale, but the transfer alone does not establish one.
The reported average sale price also differs from the approximate $2,680 value assigned to each ETH in the latest movement. As a result, the $3,096 average reflects Lookonchain’s reported sales across the broader 2,000 ETH position.
Other large Ethereum holders have moved substantial amounts during September, according to the supplied report. However, those separate transactions do not establish a shared strategy or reveal why this investor chose to reduce exposure.
The wallet’s reported $6.19 million in sale proceeds stands against an original purchase costing approximately $56,500. Meanwhile, its remaining 1,000 ETH leaves the investor exposed to further changes in Ethereum’s price.
