What to Know

  • Ethereum’s 20% rally increased BitMine’s 5.815 million ETH portfolio value by $2.2 billion as the cryptocurrency surpassed $2,200 per coin.
  • BitMine still carries $6.09 billion in unrealized losses because its average Ethereum acquisition price remains significantly higher at $3,357.63 currently.
  • Tom Lee believes Ethereum could provide programmable financial infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence, robotics, automated transactions, and decentralized applications at scale.

BitMine Immersion Technologies gained $2.2 billion in Ethereum portfolio value as ETH climbed above $2,200 during the broader market rebound. According to CryptoQuant analyst Maartunn, Ethereum’s 20% increase raised BitMine’s holdings from roughly $11 billion to $13.2 billion.

The company owns 5.815 million ETH, giving it exposure to nearly 4.8% of Ethereum’s entire circulating supply. Consequently, large Ethereum price movements can produce significant changes in the value of BitMine’s cryptocurrency reserves.

BitMine has accumulated ETH regularly for more than one year, making Ethereum central to its corporate treasury strategy. Moreover, the company has staked approximately 87% of those holdings rather than keeping its entire position inactive. Its staking operation generates approximately $250 million in annual income, providing returns beyond changes in Ethereum’s market price.

BitMine’s $2.2 Billion Boost Comes With a Large Unrealized Loss

Despite the $2.2 billion valuation increase, BitMine’s Ethereum investment remains considerably below its reported overall acquisition cost. DropsTab data estimates the company’s unrealized portfolio loss at $6.09 billion, representing approximately 31.25% of invested capital.

BitMine has committed around $19.49 billion to its position at an average acquisition price of $3,357.63 per ETH. Therefore, ETH remains well below BitMine’s average purchase level even with its 20% rally above $2,200.

Management has also pursued company share repurchases while maintaining its strategy of accumulating and staking large quantities of Ethereum. Meanwhile, BitMine Chairman Tom Lee sees Ethereum’s expanding utility as an important part of the company’s long-term investment thesis.

Lee highlighted Ethereum’s breakout against Bitcoin above 0.02994 as a meaningful change in the relationship between both cryptocurrencies. He believes institutional investors increasingly recognize Ethereum’s practical applications rather than viewing ETH primarily as a speculative cryptocurrency.

Additionally, Lee expects artificial intelligence and robotics to increase demand for programmable infrastructure capable of handling automated transactions. His argument places Ethereum smart contracts among technologies that could provide settlement infrastructure for AI agents and autonomous digital systems.

Lee consequently considers Ethereum an important downstream AI investment because machine-driven economies could require blockchain-based financial infrastructure. Fundstrat’s broader thesis also distinguishes Ethereum’s potential role from Bitcoin’s position within institutional portfolios. Under that framework, Bitcoin operates primarily as digital gold, while Ethereum provides programmable infrastructure for transactions and decentralized applications.

Conclusion

Ethereum’s rise above $2,200 delivered a $2.2 billion valuation increase for BitMine’s massive 5.815 million ETH position. However, the company’s reported acquisition cost means its Ethereum portfolio still carries billions of dollars in unrealized losses.
