Upbit Delists BONK Over Serious Security Breaches and Disclosure Concerns

South Korea’s largest crypto exchange, Upbit, has announced it will end trading support for the Solana-based memecoin BONK on September 7. The exchange cited serious security incidents and concerns about the project’s disclosure practices.
The decision follows a major governance attack that exposed weaknesses in BonkDAO and raised fresh questions about investor protection. The announcement has created uncertainty for BONK holders, as trading access narrows and investors consider what the delisting means for their holdings.
Why Upbit Is Delisting BONK
Upbit said BONK had experienced security incidents involving the systems used to issue, transfer, and store its virtual assets. The South Korean crypto exchange specifically cited hacker attacks that remained unexplained or unresolved, creating concerns about the safety of the asset.
Upbit also highlighted delays in disclosing security incidents, noting how such failures increased uncertainty for users and weakened market confidence. These concerns became particularly important after a recent attack targeted BonkDAO’s governance system and compromised control over treasury assets.
According to security reports, attackers manipulated the governance process before approving a proposal that transferred roughly $20 million in BONK. The attackers reportedly acquired substantial voting power and used it to successfully push through the unauthorized treasury transfer.
The incident exposed weaknesses in BonkDAO’s governance safeguards, particularly protections against concentrated voting power controlling important treasury decisions. Thus, Upbit determined that continuing support could expose its users to additional risks while the underlying concerns remained unresolved.
Impact on the BONK Ecosystem
Upbit’s announcement to end trading support for BONK caused the dog-themed memecoin to drop over 8% in 24 hours. As of this writing, BONK trades at $0.052, managing a moderate market capitalization of $224.236 million.
Upbit has previously taken similar action against digital assets when security vulnerabilities or unresolved incidents raised concerns about investor protection. The exchange earlier moved to end support for FLOW after identifying security concerns and previous incidents involving the blockchain ecosystem.
That decision demonstrated how security problems can become serious enough to affect whether an asset remains available on major exchanges. BONK’s situation is no different because Upbit cited both unresolved security concerns and inadequate disclosure when announcing its latest action against BONK.
Meanwhile, for investors, losing support on a major exchange can reduce liquidity and make buying or selling the asset more difficult. The decision therefore reaches beyond BONK’s immediate price performance, placing greater attention on governance, security, and transparency across crypto projects.
